ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was shutout 4-0 by Providence College on Friday night in a Hockey East contest at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears allowed two power play goals on the night and Matt Lundin had 23 saves in the loss. Providence was led by Chase Watson with a goal and two assists. Maine is now 14-9-0 on the season and 7-7-0 in Hockey East play, while Providence College is 13-8-1 on the season and 10-4-1 in Hockey East play.

"This was a difficult loss," said head coach Tim Whitehead. " We played a very good first period, but Providence carried the play in the second and third periods. They have a good team with a great goalie. They are going to be tough to beat tomorrow night and it will be a real challenge for us."

In the first period, Maine had an early lead on shots as Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine) and Keith Johnson (Windsor, Conn.) had strong chances. The Friars had the first power play opportunity of the game and were able to get several strong shots on net.

The Black Bears then had a power play that began at 13:24 in the period which started a four-minute stretch where Maine carried the play. Derek Damon (Bangor, Maine) had a shot go wide at the 17:00 mark, but Providence responded with a shot by Colin McDonald on a break-away that was saved by Matt Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn.). With the team's skating four-on-four, Providence got on the board first when Cody Wild scored with assists by Torry Gajda and Chase Watson at 19:04. Maine had a ten to nine lead on shots in the period.

The momentum shifted to the Friars in the second period, as Providence began getting shots on net. At 6:46 in the period, the Friars scored on a power play when Jamie Carroll took a shot from the slot that got past Lundin. Colin McDonald and Chase Watson had assists on the goal. At the mid-point of the period, Maine had yet to tally a shot while Providence had eight. Maine had an opportunity at 9:35 when Billy Ryan (Milton, Mass.) got two shots off, one that was saved and one that was blocked. The Black Bears had two power play chances as the period continued, but only had one shot. In the period, Maine was outshot nine to two, with the two shots the lowest for the Black Bears in a period this season.

The Friars continued to carry the play in the third period. Maine got a break at 1:50 into the period when a Providence goal was waived off due to interference with the goalie. But the Friars were able to add to the lead at 5:50 when Tony Zancanaro scored with assists by Torry Gajda and Matt Taormina. It was the second power play goal of the game, and only the second time this year Maine has allowed two power play goals in a game. Providence added the final goal of the night at 15:44 when Chase Watson scored with assists from Jamie Carroll and Dinos Stamoulis. Maine was outshot in the third period nine to eight.

In goal, Maine's Matt Lundin had four goals against and 23 saves. For Providence, Tyler Sims had the shutout with 20 saves. Maine had eleven penalties for 22 minutes and Providence had nine penalties for 18 minutes. On power plays, Maine was 0-4 and Providence was 2-6. For the game, Maine was outshot by the Friars 27 to 20. The game marked the first time since October 22, 2004 (a 1-0 loss to St. Lawrence) that Maine was shutout at home.

The Black Bears wrap up the season series with Providence on Saturday night. The game will be broadcast live on WABI-TV 5 in Bangor, WPFO-TV23 in Portland and www.watchmainesports.com. For more information on University of Maine athletics or tickets, visit www.GoBlackBears.com or call 581-BEAR.
