BOSTON - Extending the country's best win streak to seven games, the No. 13/14 Boston University men's ice hockey team (14-8-2, 11-6-1 HE) defeated the University of Massachusetts (9-14-0, 6-10-0 HE) by a 3-1 score on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. The Terriers' second line of junior Kenny Roche (South Boston, Mass.) and sophomores Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Bryan Ewing (Plymouth, Mass.) combined for all three goals and seven of BU's nine points on the evening.
The Terriers scored a goal in each period, which was only interrupted by a shorthanded breakaway goal by the Minutemen midway through the third. Having won nine of its last 10 games, BU now holds sole possession of the No. 2 spot in the league.
"More than anything else, I'm pleased that we kept on the winning streak and got two points," said BU Head Coach Jack Parker. "Things are certainly going in the right direction. We have a pretty good winning percentage and we've got a pretty good streak going - we've played a lot of solid periods."
"You get a little bit of swagger when you start to win games, but it's not arrogance, it's a good swagger," said UMass Head Coach Don "Toot" Cahoon of BU's play.
Roche fired the puck through UMass netminder Gabe Winer's five-hole at 18:05 of the opening frame as BU took the early 1-0 lead. Although Winer made the initial save on a MacArthur shot from the right point that deflected off Ewing, Roche was waiting in the doorstep and found the low hole for his 10th goal of the season.
Next it was Ewing's turn, as senior blueliner Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) carried the puck into the UMass zone and dropped it to Roche in the left faceoff circle. Roche redirected the pass to Ewing at the top of the slot, who rocketed a shot that found the back of the net off a Minuteman skate at 7:59 of the second period for the two-goal lead.
Exactly 20 minutes later, at 7:59 of the final stanza, UMass' Chris Davis caught a breakaway during a BU power play and beat BU junior goalie John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) to the five hole to make it 2-1.
The Terriers regained their two-goal cushion for good at 13:07 when MacArthur tipped in a one-time from senior defenseman Jekabs Redlihs (Riga, Latvia) that came from Ewing.
BU out shot UMass 38-26, while the Terriers were 0-for-7 on the power play and the Minutemen were 0-for-4.
The Terriers return to action at UMass Lowell on Friday night before playing Harvard in the first round of the Beanpot on Monday, Feb. 6.
