BOSTON - Behind two Kenny Roche (South Boston, Mass.) goals and a perfect 19 saves by John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.), the sixth-ranked Boston University men's ice hockey team (17-8-2, 14-6-1 Hockey East) shut out the University of Massachusetts (11-16-0, 8-12-0 Hockey East), 3-0 at Agganis Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Terriers' national-best win streak extended to 10 games, which is th longest regular-season streak since 1979.

Capturing their fifth Hockey East series of the season, the Terriers remain in second place in the league standings behind Boston College. The cross-town rivals will square off for the Beanpot championship on Monday night at the TD Banknorth Garden.

BU allowed just 19 shots in an all-around solid defensive effort that also saw the team's penalty kill streak extend to four games. On the offensive side, it was the 10th game in a row that the Terriers scored at least three goals and the team's second-best shot count of the season (43). A single goal in the opening period, followed by a pair in the last 20 minutes gave BU its fourth shutout of the season and Curry's third in 10 games.

"I thought the first period was a pretty well-played period by both teams," said BU Head Coach Jack Parker. "We took the game away in the second period - we played very very solidly. We just clamped [the Minutemen] down and almost made them believe they weren't going to have a chance to win. I really liked how we played in all three zones tonight."

"It's just a balanced scoring attack," said sophomore Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) of the fact that all but one Terrier put up at least a shot on net. "If you look across the board, we've got five or six guys with 20 points. There's not one guy who's just head and shoulders above everyone else. That balanced attack definitely makes it a little easier - you don't have to worry about scoring every night because you know the guy next to you and the guy next to him are going to do their jobs to put some points on the board. It's very enjoyable to see everyone happy."

BU held off an offensive-minded UMass team in the first, as the Terriers blocked 11 of the 25 total shots attempted by the Minutemen, while only letting eight get through to Curry. On the contrary, the Terriers got 11-of-17 attempts through to the UMass goal and found the back of net late in the period.

Once again, the unstoppable trio of sophomores Bryan Ewing (Plymouth, Mass.) and Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.), along with Roche, combined for the goal for the early BU lead. Ewing grabbed the puck out of a scuffle at the near boards and snapped it to MacArthur for a hard-angled one-timer from the left faceoff circle. Although UMass rookie goalie Jon Quick made the initial save, Roche grabbed the rebound and backhanded it low just inside the right post at 15:15.

It was not for lack of effort that BU was held scoreless in the second frame. Out shooting the Minutemen 15-4, the Terriers were denied by Quick on every attempt as the score remained at 1-0 going into the second intermission.

Junior Eric Thomassian (Rye, N.Y.) cushioned the Terrier lead at 3:36 of the final stanza. Junior blueliner Sean Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) carried the puck up the left boards and took a shot from the edge of the faceoff circle. Senior co-captain Brad Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) deflected the rebound to the right post, where Thomassian shoveled in his fourth goal of the season.

Roche lit the lamp for the 12th time this season and ninth time in as many games to seal the victory at 14:36 of the period. MacArthur got a feed from senior Dan Spang (Winchester, Mass.) and while being chased by a UMass player up the left boards, he spun to the left and dropped a backhanded pass to Roche, who beat Quick with a one-timer through traffic.

BU was 0-for-1 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-3.

The Terriers will vie for their 27th Beanpot title on Monday night versus Boston College at 8:00 p.m.
