LOWELL, MA (Feb. 25, 2006) - The UMass Lowell River Hawks rebounded for a 6-3 win over the Boston College Eagles to earn a weekend split tonight at Tsongas Arena. With the win the River Hawks claimed a spot in the Hockey East playoffs and raised their overall record to 12-18-2 (9-14-2 Hockey East). Boston College dropped to 20-10-2 on the year (17-7-1 Hockey East), but still holds a two-point lead over Boston University for first place in the conference standings.

"I think we did a one-eighty from our game Thursday night," head coach Blaise MacDonald said. "It didn't start that way. We wanted to be more determined at the nets-our net and their net-and I think we accomplished that as the game went on.

"To have a kid like Vinny Monaco (Andover, MA) who's a recruited walk-on start his first game and play as well as he did is just a terrific story. To see his face after the game is really the reason you coach."

Boston College jumped to a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the game with a goal from Chris Collins (Fairport, NY). Brock Bradford (Burnaby, BC) and Anthony Aiello (Braintree, MA) garnered assists on the play. Shots at the end of the first period were even, but the Eagles held the 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

Junior Jeremy Hall (Mays Landing, NJ) potted his first of two goals on the night at the 17 second mark of the middle frame to even the score 1-1. Senior Bobby Robins (Peshtigo, WI) and junior Jason Tejchma (Muskegon, MI) helped set up the play.

Senior Elias Godoy (West Vancouver, BC) gave the River Hawks their first lead of the game 2-1 at 1:38 with help from Danny O'Brien (South Boston, MA) and Mark Pandolfo (North Andover, MA).

Collins' second marker of the night, a power-play tally, tied the game 2-2. Stephen Gionta (Rochester, NY) and Peter Harrold (Kirtland Hills, OH) earned assists on the Collins goal, scored at 5:39.

Freshman Mike Potacco (Kinnelon, NJ) regained the one-goal lead for UML 3-2 with a well-placed shot high over the goaltender's shoulder and just underneath the crossbar at 9:38. Freshman Nick Monroe (Groton, MA) earned an assist on the play, winning a faceoff back to Potacco.

Brian Boyle (Hingham, MA) tied the score once again 3-3 with a power-play score at 11:51. Brett Motherwell (St. Charles, IL) sent a pass deep into the zone to Boyle on the right side, who then swatted the puck out of midair and into the net. Harrold earned his second assist of the night on the play.

Hall's second score of the night at 14:54 proved to be the game winner. Defenseman Kim Brandvold (Oslo, Norway) started the play at the blueline, sending a pass to Robins in the left circle. Robins skated a few feet into the slot and sent a shot on net; Hall collected the rebound and drove it home.

Junior René Gauthier (Tecumseh, ONT) closed out the scoring in the second period, the benefactor of a lucky bounce on a faceoff in the neutral zone. Senior Brad King (Calgary, BC) earned the lone assist.

Seven of the game's nine total goals were scored in the second period, five by UMass Lowell and two by Boston College. The five-goal outburst by the River Hawks marked the most goals BC has given up in one period this season. Boston University scored four goals in the third period of a 6-2 win over the visiting Eagles back in December.

Pandolfo scored an insurance goal into the empty net with two seconds remaining in the game for the 6-3 final. Godoy and King helped set up the play.

Monaco made 36 saves to earn a win in his first collegiate start. Cory Schneider (Marblehead, MA) stopped 28 shots for the Eagles. BC was 2-10 on the power play whilst holding UML scoreless in five chances.

UMass Lowell closes out the regular season with a two-game set against Vermont at Tsongas Arena next weekend. Friday's game will be broadcast on NESN at 7:00 pm.
