BOSTON - Top-seeded Boston University won its first Hockey East Tournament title since 1997 as freshman Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) scored the game-winning goal at 14:22 of overtime to give the Terriers a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Boston College at the TD Banknorth Garden in front of a crowd of 16,443. It marked the third time in the last four years the championship game went to overtime. For the Terriers it's their sixth tournament title in school history.
With the victory the Terriers improve 25-9-4 on the season and they clinch Hockey East's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Boston College falls to 23-12-3 on the year.
For just the second time in the 22-year history of the Hockey East Tournament and for the first time since 1986 the Eagles and Terriers met in the title game.
Boston College sophomore Mike Brennan (Smithtown, N.Y.) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 3:24 of the first period. Brennan skated through traffic down the slot and scored a short side goal top-shelf over the blocker of BU junior goalie John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) to give the Eagles the early advantage. Junior Joe Rooney (Canton, Mass.) assisted on the first goal of the season for Brennan.
At 14:30 of the second period Boston University freshman John McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) tied the game at one when he turned and fired shot from just inside the right circle. McCarthy's shot went off the shoulder of BC sophomore goalie Cory Schneider (Marblehead, Mass.) and into the net.
With the game tied at one neither team scored in the third period sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session Yip notched the game-winner at 14:22. Freshman Jason Lawrence (Saugus, Mass.) carried the puck across the blue line on the left side and found freshman Chris Higgins (Lynnfield, Mass.) at the right circle. Higgins fired a cross-ice pass to Yip skating to the net and his shot went just inside the left post for the goal.
Schneider made 37 saves in the loss for BC and Curry made 29 in the win for the Terriers.
