LOWELL, MA (Oct. 28, 2005) - Senior F Mark Pandolfo (North Andover, MA) registered his first career hat trick to lead the UMass Lowell River Hawks past visiting Boston University 7-4 at Tsongas Arena tonight. The game marked the first Hockey East win for the River Hawks this season and raised their overall record to 2-4-0 (1-3-0 Hockey East) while the Terriers fell to 1-2-0 (1-1-0 Hockey East).

"I'm really proud of the players. They got themselves organized and really responded well to some truculent time we've been going through," head coach Blaise MacDonald said. "It was nice to see them get what they deserve."

Senior F Andrew Martin (Brampton, ONT) opened the scoring for the River Hawks with his first power-play goal of the season at 10:38 of the opening frame. Cleve Kinley (Powell River, BC) and Elias Godoy (West Vancouver, BC) garnered assists on the play.

The Terriers' Brian McGuirk (Danvers, MA) evened the score just over a minute later with a 4-4 four goal assisted by Peter MacArthur (Clifton Park, NY) and Kevin Kielt (Brick, NJ).

Senior F Brad King (Calgary, ALB) set up Pandolfo's first score of the night, gaining the puck from a scrum along the boards in the defensive zone and sending an outlet pass to the streaking winger. Pandolfo skated up the center of the ice, across the blueline, then cut toward the boards on the right side and fired the puck just inside the far post to regain the one-goal UML lead 2-1 at 2:22 of the second period.

Junior F Jason Tejchma (Muskegon, MI) tallied his second goal of the season when he converted a nifty backhand pass from Danny O'Brien (South Boston, MA) at 10:27. Bobby Robins (Peshtigo, WI) also assisted on the play.

Senior F Matt Walsh (Arlington, MA) scored his first goal as a River Hawk when Kelly Sullivan's (Beverly Hills, MI) shot from the point caromed off him in front of the net at 11:44 to extend the River Hawk advantage to 4-1. Junior J.R. Bria (Monroe, CT) also earned an assist on the play, his first point as a River Hawk.

Pandolfo pushed the UML advantage to 5-1 at 1:03 of the third period with his first power-play goal of the season. Robins started the play, carrying the puck straight up center ice from the defensive zone into the attacking zone and got leveled by a BU defender for his efforts. Pandolfo picked the loose puck up and broke in alone, scoring what would prove to be the eventual game winner.

Less than one minute later, a falling Godoy sent an O'Brien pass into the net to put UML up 6-1.

The Terriers were far from finished, however, as they unleashed three straight goals. Sean Sullivan (Braintree, MA) started the onslaught with a power-play score at 2:29. Jekabs Redlihs (Riga, Latvia) and Chris Higgins (Lynnfield, MA) assisted on the play.

BU freshman Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, BC) scored his second goal of the year at 11:23 while the teams skated four on four to cut the UML lead to 6-3.

John Laliberte (Saco, ME) brought the Terriers within two when he registered his second goal of the year while the River Hawks were killing a five-minute major penalty. Kenny Roche (South Boston, MA) fired a shot from the point, which Sullivan redirected into goalie Peter Vetri's (Windham, NH) pads. Laliberte collected the rebound and sent it into the net at 12:17.

Pandolfo completed the hat trick in the waning seconds of the game, sending the puck into the empty net at 19:58.

Vetri made 32 saves to earn the win for the River Hawks. Junior John Curry (Shorewood, MN) got the starting nod for the Terriers, making 21 saves in 32:47 of play. Shortly after Walsh's goal, Curry was pulled in favor of Stephan Siwiec (Calgary, ALB) who made six stops in 25:07 and suffered the loss.

The River Hawks power play was effective tonight, scoring twice in five opportunities. The Terriers were successful in two of nine chances with the man advantage.

UML returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Union College for a non-conference match at Tsongas Arena at 7:00 pm.
