	Derek Damon tallied a goal and an assist for the Black Bears.

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts fell to 1-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 Hockey East after Saturday night's 4-0 loss to Maine (7-1-0, 2-0-0 HEA). The Black Bears got two- point performances from Derek Damon (1G-1A) and Billy Ryan (2A) in the win, while senior Gabe Winer made 35 saves on 39 shots.

Maine's Rob Bellamy broke open the scoring in the contest with a deflected shot over Gabe Winer's shoulder at 18:15 to make it a 1-0 game. Billy Ryan took the initial shot from the point before Bellamy's stick hit the puck mid- air and lifted it past Winer for the score. Winer was tested early and often in the game, turning away 19 of 20 Black Bear shots in the opening stanza.

Maine made it a 2-0 game at 7:15 of the second while rookie Topher Bevis was in the penalty box for obstruction hooking. Derek Damon sent the puck to the back of the net for the power play tally, assisted by Josh Soares and John Hopson.

A total of 23 penalty minutes were issued in the five-minute span between 5:26 and 10:26, including a five-minute major and game disqualification to Maine's Matt Duffy for hitting from behind. But the opportunity to put a dent in the score with the extended power play was negated with a bench minor to UMass for too many men on the ice, as well as a holding call on Mike Kostka at 10:09.

Instead, the Black Bears put up a three-goal lead at 11:33 with Keenan Hopson's tally during a rare three-on-three, assisted by Billy Ryan and Steve Mullin. Through two periods of play, shots were 31 to 16 in favor of the visiting team.

Maine added a shorthanded tally at 9:41 with Bret Tyler in the box for obstruction hooking. Jon Jankus' goal was unassisted, making it a 4-0 game.

Overall, UMass was 0-7 on the power play, while Maine was 1-6. Shots were 39- 31 in favor of the Black Bears. In net, Matt Lundin made 31 saves for the shutout, improving to 3-0-0 on the season. Winer fell to 0-3-0 on the season.

The Minutemen return to action next weekend when they face the Providence Friars in a home-and-home series. The teams play in Providence on Friday and in Amherst on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. both nights.
