POST-GAME QUOTES:

UNH Coach Richard Umile Opening Statement

First of all, congratulations to Boston College on winning the championship. The team came out and made the plays they had to make. Obviously we're disappointed in the way we played. We ended up giving them some goals here tonight that we're real disappointed in. The positive thing out of this loss is that we will at least be playing again next weekend, but we need to play better if we want to compete in the NCAA tournament.

Coach Umile on multiple Hockey East teams playing in the NCAA's

It would be nice if we could spread out and give Hockey East an opportunity to end up in the Frozen Four. As far was we're concerned, it doesn't make any difference [as to who UNH plays]-everybody's good at this point. It's going to be about us playing good hockey when it comes time next week. Whether we're a one seed or a two seed-obviously we might have lost that opportunity, but so be it. We have to play two games to get to the Frozen Four so we need everyone to play well.

Trevor Smith on possibly seeing BC in the NCAA's

I kind of said that going through the handshakes. It would be nice to see them down the road. It's nice to have another chance to go for. It'd be nice to see them down the road and give them 100% UNH hockey.

Boston College head coach Jerry York Opening statement

UNH was never out of the game. They really had us on our heels as they tried to tie the game in the third period – and that was a club without [Brett] Hemingway, who is one of the top forwards in our conference. We were really excited that that’s our seventh playoff championship. It’s a great tradition. They’re hard to get – you can’t go into the local department store and buy one. We’re very proud of it; we got a lot of efforts from a lot of different people.

York talking about Brian Boyle

Brian made a great pass and threw it across to Grebe. It was very unselfish. Brian’s gone from the leading scorer in league to a defenseman, and I think that he could be an All-American at both positions. I don’t think I’ve ever had a player with that sort of versatility to him. To me, his impact as a defenseman is more dominating than as a forward.

Take us through the first period

The two 4x4 goals were game-changing for us. UNH is too good a team to control the game. If you look at our games [with UNH], we could have lost three straight games. When they’re at full strength, they could win a national title. I fully believe that. In the first period there were chances both ways and Cory came up with some terrific saves. We were fortunate to get those two 4x4 goals.

Are there any areas that you would like to focus on?

I always think the coaches are looking for something better. Our break forechecking and outlet passes is probably the one area we can be smoother in. We’re scoring a lot of goals and our special teams have been on fire lately, but out 5x5 play can improve a little bit.

Do you think your team deserves a No. 1 seed?

The 1 seed doesn’t guarantee much. You’ll play one of the top 16 teams in the country, regardless, so I’m not as concerned about the seeding.

There could be five Hockey teams in the tournament. Would you like to see them spread around the four brackets?

If you put two or three in one region, there’s a great chance to see one in the Frozen Four. But the WCHA has been so dominant the last couple of years, I think it’s time for Hockey East to make a statement. If you put them in all four regions, you have the chance to do something like in Anaheim a few years ago when we had three of the four teams.

Brian Boyle

What makes UNH such a good matchup for you guys?

They’re a highly skilled offensive team. You get excited to play a team like UNH in a big stage, not because we think we’re going to walk all over them. But if we play disciplined and solid through all three zones like we did this weekend, any team is a good matchup for us.

What has been the key for you during this streak?

It’s pretty simple: playing 60 minutes of hockey that we weren’t able to do the first half of the season. Everyone has a role, and each shift guys are being responsible and taking care of business. It’s a special thing going right now; we have great camaraderie. It’s turning around - it wasn’t a flick of the switch, it was gradual. We weren’t that hot coming last year, but we got hot in the tournament – and other teams can do that too.

Cory Schneider

Any difference where you’re at now when compared to last season?

A little bit. We struggled down the stretch last year; the regular season didn’t end the way we wanted and we didn’t win the tournament. This year things have come together in the last month and everyone is doing what they’re supposed to. We’re not looking at that like we’re going to walk thru the NCAA Tournament, but this year we’re a little more battle-tested.

Brock Bradford

Talk about the playoffs for you

I wouldn’t give myself too much credit, since it’s a five-man unit. Ever since Brian went back there, everything has been so much easier. We’re doing the little things right and we’re also getting a little luck. It’s just fun to be a part of and hopefully we can carry it into the tournament.

Last year, lost heartbreaking title game, ending played into success this year?

Last year we were getting to the game but little things didn’t allow us to get over the hump and win the big games. We’re on a good streak, but we have to realize that if we lose one more game we’re done for the season. We’ll celebrate a little tonight but we’ll begin getting ready for our next game tomorrow.
