Mike Machnik has been named the recipient of the Concannon Media Award

BOSTON - Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna announced on Tuesday at the league's annual media day that Merrimack's Mike Machnik has been named the 20th recipient of the prestigious Joe Concannon Hockey East Media Award. Machnik will start his 19th year in his affiliation with Merrimack College this coming season. Machnik is the first media member affiliated with Merrimack College to be bestowed with the honor.

Machnik, who has been involved in college hockey since 1985, joined the Merrimack radio team with Dan Roche in 1991 and has done radio with Merrimack from 1991-94, 1996-05, 2009-present for a total of 14 seasons to date. He also helped launch U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) in 1996, planning and building out site infrastructure and worked for them for nine years through 2005, writing, broadcasting and providing technical support for the website.

He then joined College Hockey News (CHN) and helped to launch that site in 2005, and has handled duties that include writing, editing, podcast interviews, and consultation for site building and infrastructure.

Machnik has also done some TV and radio work with Northeastern University, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine. Machnik was the recipient of two AP Broadcaster Association Awards in 1994 with Merrimack Radio and in 2008 doing UNH games on New Hampshire Public Television (NHPTV).

Machnik resides in southern New Hampshire with his wife Kelly and four children, Katie, Tommy, and twins Ally and Abby.

The award was renamed in memory of long-time Boston Globe Sportswriter Joe Concannon in 2001. Each recipient has demonstrated a superior body of work in covering and promoting Hockey East over an extended period.

The Hockey East Association is a 10-team Division I college men's hockey conference founded in 1984 and an eightteam Division I women's league which began play in 2002-03. The men's league has won seven NCAA championships in the past 19 years.
