TEAM/CONFERENCE NOTES

UMass Lowell: Despite Thursday's 3-2 overtime loss to Yale in the Frozen Four, UMass Lowell enjoyed its most successful season in its Division I era with a 28-11-2 record and deepest run into the postseason. The loss overshadowed several major announcements for the program during the week as head coach Norm Bazin was named the recipient of the Spencer Penrose Award for NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, after earning finalist honors last year. Additionally, junior D Chad Ruhwedel was named to the America Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA)/CCM All-America East Region First Team, becoming the first to do so since Maury Edwards in 2009...Last Friday, Ruhwedel singed with the Buffalo Sabres, forgoing his senior season, and skated 11-plus minutes in Buffalo's 1-0 home win Saturday over Philadelphia. Ruhwedel, who is expected to remain with the team through the remainder of the season, is the 15th player in UMass Lowell history to make an NHL roster and is expected to return to Boston Wednesday when Buffalo visits the Bruins...Ruhwedel, in absentia, will accept the Bob Monahan Award for Defenseman of the Year Tuesday night at the New England Hockey Writers Banquet in Saugus.

HOCKEY EAST IN THE FROZEN FOUR: The River Hawks marked the 38th league team to qualify for the Frozen Four in the 29-year history of the conference. Hockey East teams own a 29-30 all-time record in the Frozen Four with a 21-17 mark in semifinal play and a 8-13 record in the NCAA Championship Game. Hockey East teams have appeared in the Frozen Four in seven of the last eight years and have won the NCAA Championship in four of the last six seasons.
