The Hockey East Championship will return to TD Garden on March 21 and 22
BOSTON - Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna announced the 2013-2014 men's composite schedule for the league's upcoming 30th anniversary season on Tuesday afternoon at the conference annual media day at TD Garden. The schedule features a 20-game league slate for each of the 11 member schools in addition to several highlighted non-conference matchups during the season.
The Boston College Eagles will be the first Hockey East team to drop the puck in 2013-14, when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the University of Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 10. The league's other ten institutions get underway the following night, on Friday, Oct. 11, including the first conference tilt of the year between Massachusetts and Boston University at Agganis Arena.
Also on the weekend of Oct. 11-12, Merrimack will open their season with a pair of games on the road at the University of Denver, while Maine will visit St. Lawrence for two contests. Northeastern hosts Alabama-Huntsville for two games to start their season that weekend, while Providence will face Minnesota State twice at the newly renovated Schneider Arena. New Hampshire will spend the opening weekend at the IceBreaker Tournament in Minnesota.
The defending Hockey East champion UMass Lowell River Hawks will play a home-and-home series with Quinnipiac on Oct. 18-19, in a matchup featuring two teams from last year's Frozen Four. Two weeks later, on Nov. 1-2, Notre Dame will make its Hockey East debut with a pair of games at Vermont.
For the first time ever all 11 teams will qualify for the Hockey East playoffs. The top 5 teams in the league standings will get a first round bye, while teams 6 through 11 will faceoff in a single-game playoff on March 7 and 8 at the sites of the higher seeds (No. 6 hosting No. 11, No. 7 hosting No. 10 and No. 8 hosting No. 9.) Advancing teams will then be reseeded and will play best-of-three quarterfinal series on the campuses of the four high seeds on the weekend of March 14-16, 2014. The four quarterfinal winners will be reseeded and advance to the TD Garden in Boston for the semifinals and Championship Game on Friday, March 21 (5/8 p.m.) and Saturday, March 22 (7 p.m.).
