WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Hockey East Association commissioner Joe Bertagna announced on Monday afternoon a season-long fan ballot initiative that will recognize the great players, coaches, teams and moments of the league's first 24 seasons.

“Our fans will have a good deal of fun with this and, in the process, I’m sure there will be passionate differences of opinion,” said Bertagna. “All ten of our institutions can claim some of the best moments of the last quarter century. It will be interesting to see where this all ends up.”

Plans call for season-long balloting for All-time Team, Top 25 Forwards, and Top 25 Defenders, the latter category encompassing defensemen and goaltenders. Honorees in these categories will be announced at the 25th Annual Hockey East Championships, which are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, 2009, at the TD Banknorth Garden.

In addition to these major categories, the conference will unfold a number of other ballot questions at regular intervals throughout the year. These include Best Goaltender, Best Goal Scorer, Best Playmaker, Best Defensive Defenseman, Best Defensive Forward, Unsung Player, Most Memorable Moment, Best Individual Performance, and Best Coaching Performance. These votes will be spread out throughout the season, with weeklong voting followed by the release of the chosen player, coach or performance. All conference-wide voting will be conducted through hockeyeastonline.com.

Finally, each member institution will conduct its own voting through its own web site, with each school choosing the category or categories it wishes to promote. These will be introduced at staggered times throughout the year.

Voting for the All-time Team, Top 25 Forwards, and Top 25 Defenders will begin once games are underway in mid-October.

The Hockey East Association is a 10-team, Division-I college hockey conference, with offices based in Wakefield, Mass. Founded in 1983, the league has won five NCAA championships in the past 16 years. The conference also sponsors an eight-team women’s league which began play in 2002-03.
