BU and UNH face-off twice this weekend on NESN

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- In a full weekend of Hockey East play, No. 12 New Hampshire and No. 2 Boston University will play a home and home series, with both games being broadcast on NESN. No. 5 Northeastern will also play a home and home series with Providence, who is unbeaten in its last five. Massachusetts heads to Burlington for a two-game set with No. 7 Vermont and Maine travels south for a pair of games at No. 14 Boston College.

The Wildcats will first head to Agganis Arena on Friday night before hosting the Terriers at the Whittemore Center on Saturday night. UNH is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, while BU is unbeaten in ten of its last 11. Terrier rookie netminder Kieran Millan (Edmonton, Alb.) ranks first in the nation with a .893 winning percentage. BU’s defensive core also boasts four of the league’s top eight scoring defensemen. Wildcat forward Bobby Butler (Marlboro, Mass.) is riding an eight-game scoring streak and has tallied a goal in each of the last four games. The last time the teams met was on Oct. 19, when the ‘Cats topped the Terriers 2-1.

The Friars host Northeastern on Friday before the Huskies host at Matthews Arena on Saturday. The Friars have outscored their opponents 19-13 during their five-game unbeaten streak, while two-time reigning Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made 121 saves during three games last week. Northeastern has been backboned by goaltender Brad Thiessen (Aldergrove, B.C.), who has played all 22 games this season for the Huskies, averaging 1.89 GAA and amassing a .940 save percentage. The teams last met on Oct. 19, when the Huskies shut out the Friars 4-0.

Vermont will host the Minutemen at Gutterson Fieldhouse for a two-game set this weekend. The teams last met on Nov. 25 at the Mullins Center, when the Catamounts came from behind to earn a 3-2 victory, behind Peter Lenes’ (Shelburne, Vt.) overtime goal. UVM will look to Reebok Player of the Week Viktor Stalberg (Gothenburg, Sweden) for consistency, as he is riding an 11- game point streak. UMass will look to the offensive line of Casey Wellman (Brentwood, Calif.), Will Ortiz (Framingham, Mass.) and T.J. Syner (Springfield, Mass.), for offensive power, as the trio has combined for eight goals and 12 assists in the last six games, good for 42% of UMass’ offense.

BC will host Maine beginning with a Saturday night game, followed by a Sunday matinee. The teams last met on Nov. 9, when the Black Bears earned a 2-1 victory behind rookie Brian Flynn’s (Lynnfield, Mass.) late third period goal. Maine senior captain Simon Danis-Pepin (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que.) leads the Black Bears, having notched two goals and five assists in his career against the Eagles. BC captain Brock Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.) leads the league in goals, having tallied 15 so far on the year.

UMass-Lowell and Merrimack get an early start on the full weekend of league play with a Thursday night game at Tsongas Arena. River Hawks sophomore defenseman Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alb.) leads league blueliners in both goals (8) and points (17). He has four multi-point games this season and enters the weekend on a three-game point streak. UML won the first meeting of the season series, 3-1, on November 25 at Lawler Arena. Merrimack’s 500th game in Hockey East is slated for Saturday night, January 24 against Lowell at Lawler Arena.
