WAKEFIELD, Mass. - The Hockey East Association placed seven student-athletes on the 2009 Reebok All-America Teams, as announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) on Friday night on the off-day of the Frozen Four.

The league garnered four of the six spots on the First Team and three entries on the Second Team. The First-Team is highlighted by a pair of Boston University Terriers in senior defenseman Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Colin Wilson (Winnipeg, Man.), along with junior forward Viktor Stålberg (Gothenburg, Sweden) from the University of Vermont. Hockey East Player of the Year Brad Thiessen (Aldergrove, B.C.) was honored as the First-Team goalie from the Northeastern University Huskies.

Gilroy and Wilson have led the Terriers to the Frozen Four and a No. 1 national ranking for the majority of the season. Gilroy, a three-time All-America selection, has amassed a career-high 36 points in his senior season, while Wilson leads the team in scoring with 52 points (15g,37a). His 1.27 points per game ranks sixth in the nation among Division I players. They both were named First- Team Hockey East All-Stars in 2009. Stålberg had a breakout junior season with the Catamounts, posting a career-high 45 points (24g), as Vermont’s top sniper. His 1.18 points per game was 14th best in the country this season, as he has helped guide the team to its first Frozen Four appearance in 12 years.

Thiessen, a First-Team Hockey East All-Star selection, had a season for the ages on Huntington Ave. at historic Matthews Arena. He played in early minute for the Huskies and was tied for the national lead in games played. He tallied a 2.12 GAA and a .931 save percentage overall in his junior year to go along with a 25-12-4 mark. He helped the Huskies to a second place finish in the league standings, as the Hockey East Goaltending Champion (2.09 GAA, .932 save%).

On the Second-Team, sophomore blueliner Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alb.) from UMass-Lowell and sophomore forward James Marcou (King Park, N.Y.) were honored, along with Terrier defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.). Edwards was second on the River Hawks roster in scoring with 29 points. Marcou exploded for a 47-point second season in Amherst for the Minutemen, as the team’s leading scorer. Marcou was also named a First-Team Hockey-East All-Star for his efforts in his sophomore campaign. Shattenkirk was named the 20th Terrier blueliner in the 25-year history of Hockey East to garner All-America honors. He registered a career-high 26 points in his sophomore season for the Terriers.

With the addition of seven All-Americans this year, the league has boasted 174 All-America selections in the 25-year history of the conference (an average of almost seven per season).
