MERRIMACK, VERMONT SKATE TO 1-1 TIE

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Senior netmider Jim Healey (Holyrood, N.F.) made 37 saves and sophomore John Goebel (Parma, OH) scored his third goal of the season as Merrimack College earned a 1-1 tie with No. 11 Vermont in Hockey East action Saturday night at Lawler Arena.

Ryan Gunderson scored his first goal of the season for the Catamounts (14-8-4, 9-4-4 Hockey East) while the tie gives the Warriors (3-18-04, 3-13-2 Hockey East) points in consecutive games for the first time this season.

Goebel scored the only goal of the first period when he banged home a pass from freshman Justin Bonitatibus (Framingham, MA) on the power play at 12:25. Senior Matt Byrnes (Denver, CO) started the play and was credited with his fifth assist of the season.

In the second, Gunderson evened the score with a wrister from the left circle on the power play at 5:22. Peter Lenes sent a pass to Colin Vock, who fed Gunderson for the power play marker.

Healey stopped 77 of 79 shots (.975 save pct.) in the weekend series against the Catamounts while Mike Spillane got the call for Vermont and stopped 27 of 28 shots.

The Warriors, who were outshot 38-28 on the evening, finished the evening 1-for-4 on the power play while Vermont scored on one of its five chances with the man advantage.

The Warriors return to action next Friday when they battle the Huskies of Northeastern University at Matthews Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m and can be seen on NESN.
