PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Vermont's Torrey Mitchell and Dean Strong each
registered one goal and two assists to lead the Catamounts (3-4-1) to a 4-
2 HOCKEY EAST road win over the Providence College Friars (2-7-1) on
Friday, November 10 in at PC?s Schneider Arena.
The Friars got into trouble early as Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in
the first 8:55 of the game. Chris Myers notched the first tally of the
game when he beat Friar netminder Ryan Simpson at the 7:38 mark. Viktor
Stalberg netted the Catamounts' second goal when he fired in a shot at
8:55. Friar sophomore Pierce Norton cut the Catamount lead in half when
he scored the first of his two goals on the night. He tipped a shot by
sophomore Nick Mazzonlini past Vermont goaltender Joe Fallon at 12:01.
However, Vermont regained its two-goal cushion as Strong rifled in a shot
with just 52 seconds remaining in the first period.
The second period opened with back and forth play as the Friars looked to
score their next goal and get back into the game. It was Vermont that
was able to score a key goal and put the game out of reach as Mitchell
fired a shot that deflected off a defender in front of the net into the
back of the cage past goaltender Tyler Sims halfway through the second
period. Sims came on at the 6:11 mark of the second period after Simpson
left the game due to an injury. Norton worked to get the Friars back
into the contest when he registered his second goal of the night after he
wristed in a shot from the slot with 45 seconds remaining in the period.
Despite outshooting the Catamounts, 16-10, over the final 20 minutes of
play, the Friars were unable to get a shot past Fallon as UVM closed out
its third victory of the season.
Providence will return to action on Tuesday, November 14 against
Northeastern at PC's Schneider Arena.
