Sophomore defenseman Philip Samuelsson scored two goals for the Eagles

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore defenseman Philip Samuelsson scored twice and tallied one assist while Cam Atkinson also registered three points - one goal and two assists - to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 5-0 conference victory over Massachusetts before 6,821 fans in Kelley Rink.

Captain Joe Whitney, who netted a first-period score, finished with multiple points (1 goal, 1 assist) while goaltenders John Muse and Chris Venti combined for the shutout. Muse recorded 14 saves in 56:54 to capture the victory, his 16th of the season and 78th of his career, and Venti registered two saves in 3:06.

Boston College outshot the visiting Minutemen 43-16, including a 20-6 first-period advantage.

After Whitney lifted the Eagles to a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission, Samuelsson doubled the margin at 17:57 of the middle stanza.

Samuelsson then scored Boston College's first of three third-period tallies at 3:16 while on the power play.

Junior Paul Carey redirected a Steven Whitney shot at 14:18 of the third period for a 4-0 lead and Atkinson concluded the scoring at 15:43 with assists to Joe Whitney and Samuelsson. Atkinson's goal marked his 20th this season.

Massachusetts senior goaltender Paul Dainton tallied 35 saves in 54:18 in the losing effort and freshman Jeff Teglia stopped three-of-four shots in 5:42. Dainton falls to 6-9-3.

Next, Boston College will face Boston University in the 59th Beanpot on Monday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. in TD Garden.

Muse improved to 6-2-1 with a 1.21 goals against average and a .952 save percentage in nine career games against the Minutemen while Atkinson now has 15 points - eight goals and seven assists - in nine games vs. UMass ... Samuelsson recorded the second multiple-point performance of his career and his first three-point outing. He previously tallied two assists in a 7-0 home win over Merrimack on Feb. 23, 2010 ... Junior defenseman Edwin Shea played against his younger brother Colin, a UMass freshman, for the first time in his 84-game collegiate career.
