Senior goaltender Alex Beaudry made 21 saves for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey (5-3-1, 4-2-0 HE) team defeated the University of Alabama-Huntsville (0-10-1) in a non-conference game Friday night at Schneider Arena. Friar senior goaltender Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) recorded his first shutout of the season in the 3-0 win.

The lone goal of the first period was scored during a 5-on-3 power play. Sophomore Kevin Hart (Cumberland, Maine) gave PC the lead at 14:44 with a shot from the faceoff circle that sailed over the shoulder of Chargers goaltender Clarke Saunders. Red-shirt freshman Damian Cross (Nepean, Ont.) and junior Myles Harvey (Orlando, Fla.) tallied assists on Hart's first collegiate goal.

Just 1:45 into the second period, freshman Drew Brown (Grass Lake, Mich.) gave the Friars a two-goal lead on a shot that rattled off the post and beat Saunders. Brown's linemates, sophomore Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) and junior Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) registered assists after a rush up the ice that started the play.

The Friars' recent success on the power play continued as junior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored late in the third period on the man advantage. The goal was result of a sequence of pin-point passes by freshman Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) and Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.). The Friars went 2-for-4 on the power play and have eight power-play goals in the last four games.

The Friars outshot the Chargers 48-21, with the Friars generating 19 of those shots in the first period. Beaudry stopped all 21 shots, recording the second shutout of his career. Beaudry's only other collegiate shutout came on November 5, 2010 in a 2-0 win against Merrimack. Saunders made 45 saves.

The two teams will complete the second game of the weekend series tomorrow night at Schneider Arena with a 7:00 puck drop.
