NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Paul Carey scored with 5:31 to play giving #3/4 Boston College the weekend sweep following a 2-1 victory over #9 Merrimack in front of a sellout crowd of 2,489 at Lawler Arena.
Merrimack (15-9-6, 11-8-4 HEA) will host #6 UMass Lowell in a huge weekend series beginning Friday at Lawler Arena at 7 p.m. A very limited amount of tickets are available online at merrimackathletics.com and at the Merrimack box office. Merrimack heads to the Tsongas Center in Lowell next Saturday to take on the River Hawks with plenty of tickets available.
Following Maine's loss to UMass, Merrimack is two points behind Maine for fourth and three behind BU for third. Merrimack has a game-in-hand and the season series on the Black Bears. The Warriors did clinch a playoff berth this weekend in the Hockey East playoffs for a third straight season.
Outshooting Merrimack 12-5 in the third, Carey took a feed from Edwin Shea and skated into the slot, beating a screened Joe Cannata (Wakefield, MA) for his 11th of the year and second of the weekend.
The Warriors nearly tied it with three seconds left with Cannata on the bench for the extra attacker, but a one-timer from Jesse Todd (Calgary, AB) was stopped by Milner.
Merrimack had its chances in the first period as Todd rang one off the cross bar and Brandon Brodhag (Brooklyn Park, MN) was stopped on a mini-breakaway, but it was the Eagles who struck first, as Brian Dumoulin netted his fifth of the year on the power play at 10:44 to give the visitors the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
After Connor Toomey (Billerica, MA) hit the second post of the game for the hosts, Todd tied the game on the next shift, taking feeds from Ryan Flanigan (Rochester, NY) and Dan Kolomatis (Basking Ridge, NJ) and beat Parker Milner over the glove at 8:56 for his team-leading 11th of the season. Merrimack had 16 of the period's first 19 shots, including another Brodhag breakaway that was denied by Milner.
The Eagles controlled most of the third, outshooting Merrimack 12-4 and took the lead behind Carey's 11th of the year at 14:29. Cannata made multiple stops, including a glove save off a rebound stop by Bill Arnold at 5:12 and a left pad stop on Chris Kreider at 11:30.
Cannata finished with 26 saves, while Milner made 30, 17 in the second period.
Boston College was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Merrimack went 0-for-1. The Warriors were awarded just three power plays in the weekend.
