Junior forward Steven Whitney had two shorthanded goals and an assist for the Eagles
BOSTON - Junior Steven Whitney scored twice while shorthanded in the second period and notched an assist while freshman Johnny Gaudreau also recorded two goals and one assist to lead fourth-ranked Boston College past Northeastern, 7-1, in the first round of the 60th annual Beanpot before 17,565 fans at TD Garden.
BC will face Boston University, which beat Harvard, 3-1, earlier in the day for the title on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Paul Carey also scored twice and classmate Barry Almeida tallied two points - one goal and one assist - for the victors, who advance to the four-team tournament's championship for the 31st time including the 12th time under head coach Jerry York.
BC scored each of the game's first two goals, led 2-1 after the first period took a 5-1 lead into the third.It tacked on a pair of third-period scores for the 7-1 final, eclipsing the team's season high for goals (6) done three times earlier this winter.
Junior goaltender Parker Milner registered 22 saves to capture in victory in his Beanpot debut. He improves to 13-5-0 this seaosn.
Carey (5:14) and Gaudreau (9:43) opened the scoring with consecutive tallies within the game's opening 10 minutes before Northeastern scored its lone goal of the game while skating with a two-man advantage at 12:44 of the first period.
Whitney's shorthanded scores came at 6:51 and 13:13 of the middle period. Gaudreau netted an even-strength tally in between - at 8:58.
Almeida netted a power-play goal - his team-high 17th score this season - at 8:47 of the final frame and Carey concluded the scoring on his second goal of the night with 2:40 left in the contest.
BC outshot Northeastern in each period and finished with a 46-23 advantage in the contest.
Northeastern junior goaltender Chris Rawlings stopped 24 shots in 39:52 to take the losing effort. Sophomore Clay Witt registered 15 saves on 17 shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
