The Providence College men's hockey team suffered its first loss in the month of November, a span of four games, with a 5-2 setback to the Northeastern Huskies Friday night at Schneider Arena. The Friars fall to 6-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 in Hockey East, while the Huskies improve to 2-7-2 overall as well as Hockey East.
Northeastern came out with a fast start and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play. Steve Quailer scored the first goal of the night for the Huskies on shot from the left circle that trickled past Friar senior goaltender Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.). At 6:59, Zak Stone scored for Northeastern extending the lead to two goals. The Friars' power play provided a goal at 17:05 to cut the Huskies lead in half. Senior Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.) fired a shot from the blue line that got past Northeastern goaltender Chris Rawlings. Freshman Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) and senior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) registered assists on New's first goal of the season.
The Friars had an opportunity to tie the game when junior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down on a shorthanded breakaway. Rawlings, playing far out of his net, made the save on Schaller to keep the score at 2-1. Later into the second period, the Huskies scored two goals in less than a minute to extend their lead to 4-1. Cody Ferriero and Ludwig Karlsson scored what proved to be enough to secure the victory.
Mauermann scored a goal right under the crossbar at 4:15 of the third period with an assist from junior Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) to cut the lead to 4-2. The Huskies sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from Drew Ellement.
Northeastern outshot the Friars, 26-21. Beaudry made two saves for the Friars and senior Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) made 19 stops. Rawlings stopped 19 shots in the win. The Friars went 1- for-2 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill, continuing their special teams' success.
The Friars play their next game against Miami University on Friday, November 25 at the Denver Cup Classic in Denver, Colo. Northeastern returns home for a game against the University of Vermont tomorrow night at Matthews Arena.
