Boston College celebrates sophomore forward Quinn Smith's first goal

BOSTON - Quinn Smith's first multi-goal game of his collegiate career proved to be enough as the No. 4/5 men's hockey team defeated Harvard 4-1 in the Beanpot semifinals on Monday at TD Garden.

Parker Milner turned aside 19 Crimson shots to improve to 16-6-2 and give the Eagles their 10th consecutive win over Harvard in Beanpot play. Raphael Girard stopped 42 for Harvard to fall to 5-14-1 this season.

The Eagles will face off against Northeastern next Monday as they look to claim their fourth straight Beanpot title.

The first period belonged to the goaltenders with Milner and Girard stymieing the offensive attacks as the teams combined for 23 shots on goal.

Johnny Gaudreau had a sparkling chance midway through the period but his shot from the bottom of the circle was stopped by a diving Girard to keep the game scoreless.

Sophomore Quinn Smith tallied his third goal of the season and second in as many games as he buried a loose puck underneath the crossbar to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 28.8 seconds remaining. Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 15-8 in favor of BC.

"Quinn is a good hard-nosed checking player for us. You need some real grinders, and he's really good at it," said head coach Jerry York.

Harvard looked to knot the game early in the second but Milner flashed out the left pad to deny Boston Bruins prospect Alex Fallstrom on a partial breakaway.

The Eagles then looked to extend their lead on a Pat Mullane breakaway but Girard denied the captain's bid for his second career shorthanded goal.

BC got the insurance they needed at the end of the second period with two goals just 51 seconds apart.

Quinn Smith's second goal of the game came off a backhand, cross-crease pass from Bill Arnold at 18:18.

"You always want to help your team win games and help lead them to a victory," said Smith.

With Harvard's Danny Fick whistled off for holding, freshman defenseman Michael Matheson extended the lead to 3-0 as he one-timed a Teddy Doherty feed over Girard's glove at 19:09. The goal was Matheson's fifth of the season and third on the power play.

BC maintained their lead halfway through the third period but Harvard got on the board at 9:17 as Danny Biega's one-timer beat Milner over the glove to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Eagles regained their three goal cushion at 14:58 on a Steven Whitney wrister from the circle that beat Girard over the blocker. The goal was Whitney's 17th of the season as he continues to lead the Hockey East in goal scoring.

Final shots on goal were 46-20 in favor of BC.
