PROVIDENCE COLLEGE SKATES TO 1-1 TIE AGAINST MIAMI UNIVERSITY
Sophomore Ross Mauermann nets goal and freshman Jon Gillies makes 27 saves for Friars

Sophomore forward Ross Mauermann scored a goal for Providence

The men's hockey team tied fourth-ranked Miami (Ohio), 1-1, on Friday evening at the Steve Cady Arena. A Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) goal in the first period and 27 saves by freshman Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) led the Friars to the tie. Providence moves to 1-1-1 (0-1-0 HEA) on the year, while Miami is now 2-0-1 (0-0-0 CCHA).

Special teams proved pivotal for the Friars as Mauermann's goal came on the power play and Providence held Miami to a 0-for-5 mark with the man advantage. RedHawk goalie Ryan McKay finished with 37 saves as the Friar offense tested the freshman early and often.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead when Mauermann put home a rebound from the low slot after senior Myles Harvey (Orlando, Fla.) blasted a shot from the point that McKay made a pad save on. It was Harvey's fourth assist on the year and freshman Mark Jankowski also assisted on the goal for his first career helper. The goal officially came two seconds after junior Steven Shamanski (Carberry, Manitoba) came out of the penalty box to count for a five-on-three tally, though the chance was generated with a four-on-three advantage.

Miami's Riley Barber scored the game-tying goal at 4:40 of the second after he took a feed from Austin Czarnik and finished from just outside the goal crease. Curtis McKenzie also assisted on the play. Soon after, red shirt sophomore Damian Cross (Nepean, Ontario) found freshman Steven McParland (Schreiber, Ontario) on a cross ice breakout feed that ended in McParland ringing a wrist shot off the post. The Friars and RedHawks traded scoring chances to close out the second, including a Kyle Murphy (Fairhaven, N.J.) short-handed bid with 4:30 to play in the stanza.

Both teams continued to generate chances in the third. The RedHawks had one of their best chances to pull ahead when Barber hung behind the Friar defense and got sent on a partial breakaway that was denied by Gillies with 5:58 to play in the period. Gillies made 13 of his 27 saves in the third.

In overtime, both teams had chances as the Friars forced McKay to make five more saves to preserve the tie. At the other end, Gillies made a save just over a minute into the extra frame and as the rebound found the stick of a streaking RedHawk, junior Kevin Hart (Cumberland, Maine) blocked what would have been a great scoring chance for the home team. After overtime, the Friars and RedHawks took part in a previously agreed upon shootout, but the game officially ended in the 1-1 tie.

The Friars and RedHawks finish their two-game series tomorrow, Oct. 20 with puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Steve Cady Arena.
