PROVIDENCE COLLEGE EDGED BY MIAMI IN OVERTIME, 4-3

Senior forward Tim Schaller scored a goal for the Friars

OXFORD, Ohio - The men's hockey team battled back from three one-goal deficits, including a Noel Acciari (Johnston, R.I.) game-tying goal scored with 48 seconds to play in the third, but fourth-ranked Miami (Ohio) defeated the Friars in overtime, 4-3, at the Steve Cady Arena on Saturday night.

Trailing 3-2 with 1:15 to play in the third, Acciari banged home a rebound in front to send the Friars and RedHawks to overtime for the second time in as many nights. Acciari's first career goal was assisted by junior Kevin Hart (Cumberland, Maine) and senior Myles Harvey (Orlando, Fla.). But in overtime, Miami's Austin Czarnik netted his second goal of the game at 3:35 to give the RedHawks the win.

Providence moves to 1-2-1 (0-1-0 HEA) on the year, while Miami now stands at 3-0-1 (0-0-0 CCHA). Friar freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) made 26 stops, while his counterpart in the Miami net, freshman Jay Williams, finished with 23 saves.

In the first period, Riley Barber put the RedHawks up 1-0 at 6:48 when he took a wrist shot from the middle of the near circle that appeared to hit the cross bar and bounce out. After a video review, the play was ruled a goal. With the teams then skating four-on-four, Providence tied the game when freshman John Gilmour (Montreal, Quebec) scored his first career goal at 7:54. Gilmour and freshman Steven McParland (Schreiber, Ontario) played a give-and-go that ended with Gilmour ripping a wrist shot past the glove of Williams. The ReHawks took their second lead of the game at 18:59 when Blake Coleman converted on a partial breakaway after Matthew Caito found him with a pass through the neutral zone.

In the second period, after killing off a RedHawks power play, including a nice Gillies stop on Curtis McKenzie, senior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) stepped out of the penalty box and took a McParland feed down the far side of the ice and put a wrist shot high past Williams for his first goal of the year, tying the game at 2-2. Junior Steven Shamanski (Carberry, Manitoba) also assisted on the goal, which was scored at 4:58. Miami took the lead again when Czarnik found enough space in the slot to get a shot off for his first goal of the year, which was assisted by Barber and Byron Paulazzo.

The Friars came out and applied the pressure in the third, but Miami hung onto the 3-2 lead. Then, at 14:08, the RedHawks were whistled for a five minute charging major. After a slow start with the extended man advantage, sophomore Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) narrowly missed tipping in a Hart drive from the point. With the five-minute major expired but with an extra attacker on, Acciari gave the Friars their third game-tying goal of the night. With seven seconds to play, Gillies made a save on a RedHawks two-on-one chance to send the game to overtime.

The Friars return home to play host to Hockey East rival Maine next weekend in a two-game series that will be played on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena and the series will be televised live on Cox Sports.
