Freshman forward Ryan Lomberg scored the game-winning goal for the Black Bears

PORTLAND, Maine -- Ryan Lomberg (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal at 13:54 of the third period as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team won its third straight game with a 2-1 win over Mercyhurst on Friday night in a game played at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead at 3:02 of the opening stanza when Paul Chiasson redirected a Nick Jones shot into the back of the net. Ryan Misiak also assisted on the play.

Maine tied the game at 9:02 of the first when Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) won a face-off back to Joey Diamond. Diamond one-timed a shot past Mercyhurst goalie Jordan Tibbet for his fourth goal of the season.

The game remained 1-1 until 13:54 of the third when Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) and Mike Cornell (Franklin, Mass.) teamed up to find Lomberg. Lomberg beat Tibbett for his third goal of the season. It was the third straight game that Lomberg has tallied a goal.

Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) was outstanding, stopping 25 of the 26 shots that he faced. He improves to 3-5-2 on the season. Tibbett made 35 saves for Mercyhurst. He falls to 3-4-0.

Maine outshot Mercyhurst 37-26 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Mercyhurst finished 1-for-3.

Maine improves to 5-11-2 on the season with the win. Mercyhurst falls to 8-7-1.

The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 PM at Alfond Arena.
