PROVIDENCE COLLEGE SHUT OUT BY QUINNIPIAC, 2-0

Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies made 23 saves for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Connor Jones' two-goal second period proved to be enough for eighteenth-ranked Quinnipiac to defeat the men's hockey team, 2-0, in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Schneider Arena.

Both goaltenders played strong games for their teams as Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell stopped all 24 shots he faced in the game, recording a shutout for the Bobcats. Providence freshman netminder Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) made 23 saves for the Friars in the loss. The defeat marked the first loss at home this season for the Friars (5-5-1, 4-3-0 HEA), ending their unbeaten streak at four games. It was Quinnipiac's fifth win in a row (8-3-1, 4-0-0 ECAC).

After an evenly played first period, the Friars and the Bobcats remained scoreless. Providence had a great opportunity to grab the lead when freshman Tom Parisi (Commack, N.Y.) fired a wrist shot on Quinnipiac Hartzell that senior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) followed up on, getting the chance to score on the rebound, but again Hartzell was equal to the task. The Friars finished the period outshooting the Bobcats, 9-8.

The Friars played much of the second period shorthanded, causing the Bobcats to gain a 2-0 lead. While Schaller and redshirt freshman Noel Acciari (Johnston, R.I.) were serving time in the penalty box, Jones capitalized for Quinnipaic on the 5-on-3 man advantage. Jones battled around the crowd in front of the Providence goal following a Gillies save and knocked in the rebound to give the Bobcats the lead at 4:15. The Bobcats extended their lead, once again on the power play, with a goal from Jones at the 10:56 mark. Moments after Gillies made a save on a chance off an odd man rush, Jones picked up the puck near the side boards, skated into slot and fired a high shot that beat Gillies after deflecting on its way towards the back of the net.

Providence registered 10 shots on net, and held Quinnipiac to only two, in the final period but could not find a way past Hartzell. The closest chance that the Friars had to ignite a late comeback was with 2:34 of the third period when freshman Kevin Rooney (Canton, Mass.) scored after freeing the puck from the top of the net, but the goal was waved off. After a video review, the call on the ice stood.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 24 when they face-off against Brown in the 27th Annual Mayors Cup. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
