NO. ANDOVER, Mass. - Sophomore forward Noel Acciari had a shorthanded goal and sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies made 23 saves to lead Providence College to a 1-0 win against Merrimack College on Friday at Lawler Rink.

After both sides went 20 minutes with nothing to show on the scoreboard, the penalties began to rack up in an infraction-filled second period that saw seven combined penalties. But after the Warriors turned a 5-on-3 penalty kill into a 4-on-3 power play, Providence's Noel Acciari took a centering feed from Steven McParland and chipped it past senior Sam Marotta (Bridgewater, Mass.) for the game's only goal at 16:09 of the middle frame.

In the third, the Warriors had their chances, including a late 6-on-4 power play with the extra skater on and under a minute to play, but Gillies turned away chance after chance to preserve the shutout and hand Merrimack its third shutout setback of the year.

Merrimack and Providence conclude their weekend series tomorrow night, Nov. 9, at Schneider Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
