Senior forward Braden Pimm scored both goals for the Huskies

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The sixth-ranked Providence College men's hockey team lost in overtime to No. 16 Northeastern, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Schneider Arena.

The Friars (13-4-4, 6-3-1 HEA), who returned to Hockey East play for the first time since Dec. 6, held the lead from 7:57 of the first period until the 19:26 mark in the third period when Northeastern's (12-6-3, 5-4-1 HEA) Braden Pimm scored to tie the game. Pimm then stuck again 12 seconds into overtime to give the Huskies the victory.

Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:57 the first period when three juniors combined for the game's first goal. Ross Mauermann (Janesville, Wis.) tallied his 14th goal of the season when he put back Shane Luke's (Dauphin, Manitoba) tip in front. Stefan Demopoulos(La Mesa, Calif.) also assisted on the play by taking the original shot.

After a scoreless second period, the Friars kept up the offensive pressure in the third but could not beat Clay Witt for a second time. Then late in the third with the goalie pulled and an extra attacker on, Northeastern tied the score, 1-1 with 44 seconds remaining on Pimm's 11th goal of the year. John Stevens and Colton Saucerman assisted on the play.

Pimm didn't wait long in the overtime, scoring a goal just 12 seconds into the extra stanza to lift the Huskies to the win. Kevin Roy and Josh Manson tallied the assists.

The Friars outshot Northeastern 39-29 for the game. Sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies(South Portland, Maine) recorded 27 saves for the Friars, while Witt turned away 38 shots.

The Friars went 0-for-3 with the man advantage, while Northeastern was 0-for-1 on the power play after Providence was called for just two penalties.

Providence will next travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to face No. 4/5 Boston College at 7:00 p.m. in a Hockey East matchup on Friday, Jan. 10.

Jon Gillies returned to the Friar net after missing the previous four games while starting for the U.S. National Junior Team at the World Championship in Malmo, Sweden ... Clay Witt stopped 90 of the 94 Friar shots he faced in two games against PC this season ... With an assist, Stefan Demopoulos became the 24th Friar to record a point this season.
