ORONO, Maine - Eric Schurhamer (St. Paul, Minnesota) poked home a lose puck in the crease with 4:02 remaining in regulation to give the University of Maine men's ice hockey team a 3-1 win over the #20 University of Alaska Anchorage on Friday night at Alfond Arena.

The Seawolves opened the scoring at 9:33 of the first period when Brett Cameron passed the puck to Austin Coldwell at the top of the face-off circle who wristed it past Maine goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey). Scott Allen also assisted on the goal.

Maine answered right back when Malcolm Hayes (Atlanta, Georgia) passed the puck up to Cedric Lacroix (Sheffield, Quebec), who carried it up the ice. He found Jake Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) trailing the play alone in the slot. With traffic in front of the Seawolves goal, Rutt has his shot find the back of the net just 46 second later to tie the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied until Schurhamer's goal at 15:58. Liam Pecararo (Canton, Massachusetts) carried the puck up the ice and had an initial shot on University of Alaska goalie Olivier Mantha. Nolan Vesey (North Reading, Massachusetts) got a stick on the puck before Steven Swavely (Reading, Pennsylvania) jarred it free in the crease. Schurhamer saw the puck sitting loose in the crease, skated in and fired it into the back of the net to give Maine the 2-1 lead.

Cam Brown (Natick, Massachusetts) added an empty net goal with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation to extend Maine's lead to 3-1. Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) picked up an assist on the goal.

Maine outshot Alaska Anchorage 40-34 in the game. The Black Bears were 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Seawolves finished 1-for-6.

Maine improves to 1-4-0 on the season with the win, while Alaska Anchorage falls to 3-1-1.

Maine goalie Matt Morris was outstanding, stopping 33 of the 34 shots that he faced, several in spectacular fashion. He improves to 1-2-0.

Mantha made 37 saves in goal for the Seawolves and falls to 2-1-0.

The two teams finish their weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 25. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM from Alfond Arena. Tickets can be purchased online at www.goblackbearstickets.com(.)
