ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with #20 Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Maine got goals from Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario), Malcolm Hayes (Atlanta, Georgia) and Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) in the game.

Maine moves to 1-4-1 on the season with the tie, while Alaska Anchorage sees its record move to 1-4-1.

Maine opened the scoring 14:02 into the opening stanza with a five-on-three goal. Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) passed the puck Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) who passed it back-and forth with Hutton just inside the blueline. Hutton then unleashed a shot that beat UAA netminder Olivier Mantha.

The Seawolves tied the game at 15:07 of the second period with a shot-handed goal. Chase Van Allen fed Dylan Hubbs who broke in alone on Maine netminder Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey) to tie the score at a goal apiece. Austin Coldwell scored 1:06 later to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.

This time, it was Maine that answered as the Black Bears scored a power play goal to go into the second intermission tied at 2-2. Mark Hamilton (Winthrop, Massachusetts) fed Hayes who fired the puck into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Will Merchant (Eagan, Minn.) also assisted on the goal.

Maine took the lead 1:20 into the third period with a short-handed goal. Cam Brown (Natick, Mass.) chipped the puck up to Byron who broke in along on Mantha. He faked one way before pulling the puck back shooting it into the back of the net, as Mantha had already committed.

Alaska Anchorage answered yet again, this time just 30 seconds later. Blake Tatchell found Scott Allen alone to the right of Morris. Allen one-timed the puck into the back of the net, beating Morris glove side.

Neither team was able to score the remainder of regulation, or during the five minute overtime frame. Maine was awarded a penalty shot at 2:06 of overtime after it was ruled that an Alaska forward has displaced the net, but was unable to convert.

Maine finished the game with a 49-25 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears were 2-for-8 on the power play, while UAA converted on one of its three opportunities. Both teams netted a short-handed goal.

Matt Morris made 22 saves and moves to 1-2-1 on the season. Olivier Mantha stopped 46 shots and moves to 2-1-1.

Maine returns to action when it swings into Hockey East play on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The Black Bears welcome UMass for the first conference games of the season. Tickets can be purchased online at www.goblackbearstickets.com(.)
