BURLINGTON, Vt. - 12th-ranked Vermont roared back from three goals down in the third period but fell one short as No. 3 Boston University added an empty-netter and secured a 4-2 Hockey East victory on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts dropped to 15-7-2 (7-5-1 HEA), while the Terriers improved to 14-4-4 (9-2-2 HEA) to take over sole possession of first place in the league. Vermont out-played BU in the first period, holding the Terriers to two shots until the closing minutes of the frame. Mario Puskarich hit the post from the left circle after beating Matt O'Connor glove side.

BU struck first at the 13:53 mark of the second as Robbie Baillargeon held the puck in along the left wing boards. Baillargeon centered a pass to Ahti Oksanen in the right circle, and he one-timed a shot inside the right post to open the scoring.

The Terriers doubled the advantage with 15 seconds left in the frame. Baillargeon found Cason Hohmann in the bottom of the left circle, and the senior tucked a shot into the upper right corner from a weak angle. The play was initially ruled no-goal on the ice, but the call was overturned after video review.

Evan Rodrigues extended the lead just three minutes into the third, skating coast to coast and beating Hoffman high glove side from the right circle. Mike Santaguida replaced Hoffman after the third goal.

Colin Markison responded quickly for the Catamounts, firing home a centering pass from Brendan Bradley less than a minute later. Kevin Irwin collected the second assist on the play at 3:54.

Later in the period, UVM went on a power play and pulled Santaguida for a 6-on-4 advantage. Mike Paliotta's initial point shot was saved by O'Connor and Markison's rebound attempt was blocked up in the air. Former Terrier Alexx Privitera located the puck in the slot and wristed a shot inside the left post to cut BU's cushion to one.

The Cats pulled Santaguida for an extra skater with a minute left, but Jack Eichel skated onto a self-pass down the left wing and fired home the empty-netter to seal the win.

UVM out-shot the Terriers 34-33 for the night, including a 15-6 edge in the third period.
