ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to #12 Vermont on Friday night at Alfond Arena. Brian Morgan (Windham, N.H.) had a pair of goals for the Black Bears, while Mario Puskarich had a pair for the Catamounts.

Vermont opened the scoring just 2:12 into the first period. Jake Fallon had a shot that Maine goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped, but the rebound went to Kevin Irwin who fired it into the open net for his third goal of the season.

Maine answered back with a pair of goals by Morgan. He tied the game at 11:40 with a shot from the top of the right circle. He gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead at 15:36 on a scramble in the goal crease. Cam Brown (Natick, Mass.) had a shot that was saved, but Morgan gained control of the puck, carried it around the back of the goal and tucked it inside the goal post. The goals were the second and third of the season for Morgan.

Mario Puskarich notched a power play goal at 5:28 of the second period to tie the score at 2-2 from Mike Paliotta and Jake Fallon.

Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) scored his fifth goal in six games when his shot from the extended blueline beat Vermont goalie Brody Hoffman. Will Merchant (Eagan. Minn.) assisted on the goal for Maine.

Puskarich answered less than a minute later with a wrist shot from the left circle. It was his seventh goal of the season. Paliotta scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 14:58 of the second period on a slap shot from the blueline. The Catamount extended their lead to 5-3 when Jarrid Privitera tipped a Chris Muscoby shot past Morris at 16:32 of the second period.

Vermont capped the scoring 30 seconds into the third period when Fallon scored a goal in transition. He redirected an Irwin shot past Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, N.C.).

Maine falls to 3-10-1 on the season, while Vermont improves to 10-3-1.

Vermont outshot Maine 28-23 in the game. The Black Bears were scoreless in four power play chances, while Vermont converted one of its five opportunities.

Maine goalie Morris made 15 saves in 40 minutes while allowing five goals. He falls to 2-4-1 on the season. Romeo made seven saves on eight shots in the final 20 minutes.

Brody Hoffman stopped 20 shots and improves to 8-1-1 on the season for the Catamounts.
