GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Led by Drake Caggiula's four-point game, third-ranked North Dakota defeated the fifth-ranked Providence College men's hockey team 6-1 at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday night before a crowd of 11,525.

North Dakota (4-1-0) built a 4-0 lead after two periods of play and Zane McIntyre stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced in the UND net. JuniorKevin Rooney (Canton, Mass.) scored the Providence (1-2-0) goal at 10:48 of the third period.

North Dakota took a 1-0 lead at 7:05 of the first when Luke Johnson's wrist shot from the faceoff dot found the far side of the net for a power-play tally, with the assists going to Nick and Jordan Schmaltz.

Following a period that saw nine minor penalties called, the first came to a close with UND holding a 1-0 lead and a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The Friars opened the second with a successful penalty kill but then after a power-play chance of their own came to an end, North Dakota extended its lead to 2-0. Gillies made a save on a Caggiula shot, but Michael Parks put the rebound in from just outside to goal crease at 6:27.

Noel Acciari (Johnston, R.I.) created a partial breakaway chance with just under 10:00 minutes left in the period, but McIntyre got a piece of Acciari's backhander for one of his best saves of the night.

North Dakota went up 3-0 when Paul LaDue skated in from the left point to pick up a rebound at the top of the slot and netted his third goal of the season at 16:02 of the second. Just over two minutes later, UND took a 4-0 lead on a Tucker Poolman power-play goal.

The score moved to 5-0 at 6:54 of the third when Bryn Chyzk forced a loose puck past the goal line after Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.) made an initial save on Johnny Simonson.

Just seconds after a Providence power-play chance expired, Kevin Rooney (Canton, Mass.) backhanded aTrevor Mingoia (Fairport, N.Y.) feed from outside McIntyre's goal crease for his first of the year. John Gilmour(Montreal, Quebec) also assisted on the play.

Moments after Mingoia hit the post, Caggiula closed the scoring with a shorthanded tally at 14:27 of the third.

Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) stopped 20 shots in the first two periods, while Ellis made eight saves in the third period. Providence was 0-for-8 with the man advantage, while UND finished 2-for-5 on the power play.

Providence and North Dakota close out their weekend series tomorrow night (Oct. 25) at 8:07 p.m. (EST) at UND's Ralph Engelstad Arena.
