ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine Men's Ice Hockey team downed Colgate 3-1 Friday night at Alfond Arena in front of 3,224 fans.

With the win, Maine snaps their three game losing streak and improves their record to 5-11-4 on the season while Colgate has lost four in a row and drops to 5-12-1 on the year.

Rob McGovern received the start in goal for the Black Bears and Charlie Finn was in net for the Raiders.

Colgate opened with the first goal of the game midway through the first period, on a Brett Corkey goal from Hunter Racine to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Maine responded five minutes later after stealing a loose puck in Colgate territory. Steven Swavely was able to beat Finn to tie the game at 1-1.

Colgate outshot the Black Bears 10-8 in the first period.

In the second period, Maine had two power play opportunities and only had five shot attempts. They were unable to convert. The Black Bears were able to kill off the lone Colgate power play opportunity in the second.

McGovern and Finn held each offense scoreless in the second heading into the third period. Maine outshot the Raiders 9-6 in the second.

The Black Bears gave Colgate a power play opportunity midway through the third on a interference penalty, but only allowed one shot attempt and held Colgate 0-3 on the power play for the game. With less than four minutes remaining in the period, Steven Swavely picked up his second goal of the game. It was Swavely's fifth of the season to give Maine a 2-1 lead.

Colgate elected to pull the goalie with 1:56 seconds remaining, Cam Brown was able to score the extra cushion goal on an empty net opportunity to seal the 3-1 victory for the Black Bears.

Rob McGovern finished with 24 saves and Charlie Finn had 30. McGovern picked up his first win of the season.

The Black Bears return to action tomorrow night, for the second game against Colgate. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
