ESTERO, Fla. - Jeff Kubiak's goal 2:56 into overtime lifted No. 9 Cornell to a 2-1 victory over the top-ranked Providence College men's hockey team in the first game of the Florida College Hockey Classic at the Germain Arena in Estero, Fla.

Providence (12-1-3) suffers its first setback of the season and sees its 19-game unbeaten streak snapped dating back to last season. Cornell improves to 9-1-2 overall with the win after getting 31 stops from netminder Mitch Gillam. Nick Ellis made 20 saves for the Friars to drop to 11-1-3 this season despite another solid effort in goal.

The Friars kicked off the second half of the season in style just 27 seconds in as Steven McParland notched his second tally in as many games with a whirl-around wrister that fooled Gillam low inside the right post. Providence pushed the pace in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Big Red by a 12-4 margin.

Ellis stood tall in the second period, with his best stop coming on a streaking Eric Freschi that the junior flashed his blocker to get a piece of. After killing off multiple penalties in the second, the Friars got caught up ice and the Big Red cashed in on the odd-man rush thanks to Jared Fiegl's first strike of the season. With 40 minutes in the books, the Friars were unable to take a lead into the third period for just the second time this season.

The teams battled through a scoreless third, but not without prime scoring chances from both teams in the waning moments. Ellis turned in his best effort of the night with 49 seconds to play as he robbed Matt Buckles' wrister from the slot with the glove shortly after Mark Jankowski had his 2-on-1 bid blocked by the Big Red defense down the other end.

In overtime, a turnover in the Friar zone led to Kubiak's strike off a rebound of a shot from Anthony Angello at the 2:56 mark of overtime.

Up next, Providence will face either Boston College or Ohio State tomorrow night in the consolation game of the Florida College Hockey Classic beginning at 4 p.m.
