NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In what proved to be a mirror image of Friday night's game, the University of Notre Dame hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth at the Compton Family Ice Arena (3,781) on Saturday night.

Notre Dame was leading 3-1 midway through the second period on a pair of goals by freshman forward Dylan Malmquist as well as a Thomas DiPauli power-play tally.

But much like the Irish on Friday night, the Bulldogs fought back to make it a 3-2 game at 10:36 of the second on Tony Cameranesi's second goal of the night.

Minnesota Duluth's Neal Pionk then scored the third period's only goal at 3:45 and the game ultimately ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Notre Dame penalty kill capped off a strong weekend, blanking the Bulldogs on all five of their power play chances Saturday night. For the weekend, Notre Dame held Minnesota Duluth to a an 0-for-12 mark on the power play.

"The penalty kill was much better this weekend," Head Coach Jeff Jackson said. "But Cal (Petersen) makes the difference, he did a pretty job controlling his rebounds on the penalty kill and that's a big factor. (Jake) Evans' ability to win face-offs was a huge factor too."

With time winding down and on the penalty kill in overtime, Anders Bjork nearly gave the Irish the win, but his partial breakaway attempt was fought off by Minnesota Duluth goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo and the rebound went just wide of the post.

Petersen was strong in the Irish net, turning in a second-consecutive 39-save effort. With Minnesota Duluth pressuring in the early stages of the game, Petersen made one of his best saves of the night when he flashed his left pad to deny Adam Johnson of a goal four minutes into the opening period. He also made a game saving, right pad save on Austyn Young with just over 2:30 remaining in overtime.

Kaskisuo finished with 27 saves for the Bulldogs.

The Irish (1-1-2, 0-0-0 HEA) finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Minnesota Duluth (2-1-2, 0-0-0 NCHC) was 0-for-5.

Notre Dame opens Hockey East play next weekend with a two-game series against Connecticut. Game one will be played at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Game two will be a 2:35 p.m. puck drop on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Goals

Dylan Malmquist put the Irish up 1-0 at 9:15 of the first period. Bobby Nardella sent the puck to the offensive blue line, where Andrew Oglevie tipped a pass off the boards. Malmquist gathered the puck along the near boards, moved towards the center of the circle and put a wrist shot past Kaskisuo for his second goal of the season. Oglevie's assist marked his first career point.

Thomas DiPauli gave the Irish a 2-0 lead at 4:58 of the second period when he stuffed home a rebound in front for his second goal of the year and his first power-play goal of the season. Anders Bjork had the initial one-timer that Kaskisuo saved, while Bobby Nardella also assisted on the play.

Tony Cameranesi made it a 2-1 game at 6:13 of the second period when he broke in alone on Petersen after an Austin Farley chip pass. Cameranesi finished with a backhander in tight for his first goal of the season.

Malmquist put the Irish up 3-1 at 6:42 of the second period when he fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle high past Kaskisuo following a Jake Evans faceoff win to Kaskisuo's right.

Cameranesi scored his second goal of the night to cut the Irish lead to one when he put in a rebound following a Petersen save on Karson Kuhlman at 10:36 of the second period. Farley also assisted on the play.

Neal Pionk tied the game, 3-3, at 3:45 of the third period when his shot from the point deflected off an Irish stick in front and went high past Petersen. Cameranesi notched the lone assist on the play for a three-point night (2-1-3).

Notes

Notre Dame finished the weekend 12-for-12 on the penalty kill versus the Bulldogs.

Andrew Oglevie had the primary assist on Dylan Malmquist's first period goal, marking Oglevie's first career point with the Irish.

With a pair of goals, Dylan Malmquist recorded the first multi-point game of his Irish career. He has notched at least one point in three of Notre Dame's first four games.

With two assists, Bobby Nardella posted the first multi-point game of his Irish career.

Notre Dame skated to back-to-back ties for the first time since a weekend series at Western Michigan on Feb. 22-23, 2013 (T, 3-3 & T, 1-1).

Jake Evans was 14-7 on faceoffs on Saturday night to finish the weekend 26-11 (.703).
