PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The seventh-ranked Providence College men's hockey team netted five power play goals en route to a 9-1 exhibition victory over Simon Fraser on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.
The reigning national champions tallied the game's final nine goals, while junior netminder Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.) recorded the win with eight saves in 39:56 of action. Freshman Hayden Hawkey (Parker, Colo.) pitched a shutout in the third period, turning away five Simon Fraser bids. Simon Fraser goaltender, Jordan Liem, registered 47 saves in the loss.
Trevor Mingoia (Fairport, N.Y.), Erik Foley (Mansfield, Mass.), and Jake Walman (Toronto, Ontario) each netted a pair, while Nick Saracino (St. Louis. Mo.) added a game-high three assists. Mingoia finished the night with a game-high four points for the Friars.
After Simon Fraser's Mak Barden gave the visitors a 1-0 lead on the power play at the 3:16 mark, the Friars responded with four strikes to close out the first period.
The Friars tied the game at one with a goal from senior center Mark Jankowski (Dundas, Ontario) with assists from senior Nick Saracino (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Trevor Mingoia (Fairport, N.Y.) at 9:45.
Less than two minutes later, Jake Walman (Toronto, Ontario) teed up a one-timer from the top of the circle to put the Friars up for good.
At the 14:03 mark, freshman Erik Foley (Mansfield, Mass.) dazzled the crowd with the first of two highlight reel goals, as he put a backhander under the crossbar off a Tom Parisi (Commack, N.Y.).
Walman closed the first period with the Friars' fourth power play goal and his second goal of the game at 17:54. The sophomore blueliner rushed all the way up ice and blasted a sizzling shot under the glove of SFU goaltender Jordan Liem.
The Friars struck again for four in the second period thanks to Mingoia twice, Steven McParland (Schreiber, Ontario), and Foley. A stretch pass from Steven Ruggiero (Kings Park, N.Y) sent McParland in a partial breakaway, with the senior making no mistake in putting over the blocker of Liem at 5:27. Foley added his second of the contest at 12:57 after a strong move out of the corner led to a backhand under the crossbar to put Providence up 7-1.
East Providence native Bryan Lemos got on the board in the third to account for the lone goal in the final frame.
For the game, Providence boasted a 56-14 edge in shots while claiming 46-of-68 wins at the faceoff dot. The Friars recorded 13 power play shots in going 5-of-8 overall with the man advantage, while killing off 5-of-6 shorthanded opportunities.
The Friars will open regular season play with a two-game set at #11 Miami on Oct. 9-10. The two squads battled in last season's NCAA East Regional, with the Friars scoring a 7-5 win at the Dunkin Donuts Center on March 29.
