ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team tallied five power play goals, its most with the man advantage since also tallying five in 2009 as part of a 10-1 win over St. Lawrence, to defeat American International College by a score of 5-3 on Friday evening at Alfond Arena.

Chase Pearson notched his first career hat-trick and was joined in the scorebook by fellow freshmen Mitchell Fossier and Patrick Holway.

Senior's Cam Brown and Blaine Byron each added three assists as Maine went 5-for-7 on the power play in the opening two periods.

Matt Morris picked up his first win of the season between the pipes, turning away 26 shots. In total, Maine outshot AIC 39-29, including an 18-6 margin in the second period.

The scoring came quick as four total goals were tallied in the opening period. The Yellow Jackets began the flurry when Austin Orszulak found Johnny Mueller in the right circle. Mueller's shot found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Maine answered just under two minutes later with its first of two first period power play goals. Byron sent the puck around the boards and behind the AIC net where Brown settled. Brown worked the puck before firing a pass out in front to Pearson who buried the shot to knot the game at 1-1.

Blake Christensen's fifth goal of the season regained the lead for the Yellow Jackets. Hugo Reinhardt skated the puck to the center of the Maine zone where he dumped it of to Christensen. The freshman forward geared up from the blue line and beat Morris for his fifth goal of the year.

Maine was able to tie the game with just 10-seconds left in the first period. Once again working on the power play, Holway fired a shot from the point. The attempt was blocked away by AIC goaltender Alex Murray but Fossier was able to punch the puck out of the scrum and across the goal line.

Pearson tallied his second goal of the evening, and the third for Maine on the power play, to give the Black Bears their first lead of the night. Sharp tick-tack passing from the Black Bears led to the goal, Pearson's seventh of the season. Byron controlled the puck along the glass before sending a pass down low to Brown. The senior captain wasted no time, one-timing a pass right on to Pearson's tape where the freshman lit the lamp with the go ahead goal.

Maine extended its lead to 4-2 when it tallied its fourth power play goal of the night, 15:01 into the second period. Patrick Shea found fellow freshman Holway on the blue line where the defensemen fired a shot through a sea of skaters and into the back of the net.

Just 1:50 later, Pearson found the back of the net for the third time, tallying his hat-trick goal with 3:09 remaining in the second period. Once again skating on the power play, Byron rifled a shot from the top of the zone. Pearson, battling in front, tipped the puck past Murray, giving Maine a 5-2 lead on its fifth power play goal of the night.

The Yellow Jackets got a goal back when Shawn McBride capitalized on a Maine turnover, stealing a pass in front of the net and wristing a shot into the net.

The Black Bears killed off the extra skater attack, securing the 5-3 victory.
