HOW IT HAPPENED
Salvaggio gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into the first period with his team leading 21st goal of the season. The play started when junior Michael McNicholas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) stripped a UConn player of the puck in the neutral zone and dished it to Salvaggio in the slot. He fired a shot past the glove of Connecticut goalie Adam Huska.
UConn tied the game at 5:51 with a goal by Tage Thompson. Maxim Letunov threw the puck to Karl El-Mir who passed it to Thompson. Thompson fired a shot in the middle that took a deflection into the net past UNH netminder Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.). At 10:13 of the first, UConn took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Kasperi Ojantakanen. Benjamin Freeman fired a shot that went wide of the net, but Ojantakanen got the rebound and crammed it into the net.
Spencer Naas increased UConn's lead to 3-1 at 18:20 of the second period with his 15th goal of the season. Evan Richardson sent the puck from the Huskies' zone into the neutral zone to Ojantakanen. He found Naas streaking in, sent a pass to him who then put it away.
The Huskies took a 4-1 lead at 8:54 of the third period as Philip Nyberg scored his first goal of the season. Assists on the play were tallied by Joseph Masonius and Naas.
Kelleher scored his 21st goal of the season at 12:30 of the third period while on a power play to bring UNH to within two goals. McNicholas saucered a pass to Salvaggio behind the net. He sent the puck to Kelleher who unleashed a shot that beat Huska.
Blackburn made the score 4-3 at 16:28 of the third period with his seventh goal of the season. Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.) forced a turnover behind the UConn and attempted a wraparound. Huska made the initial save, but Blackburn poked the puck from under Huska's skate into the net.
The Huskies added their fifth goal of the night in an empty net with 27 seconds remaining in the third period as Ojantakanen scored. Naas registered an assist on the play.
