AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts closed its deficit to one with just under eight minutes to play in the third, but the Minutemen were unable to complete the comeback, falling to Boston University, 3-2 at the Mullins Center on Friday night. The loss leaves UMass at 11-15-1 overall and 5-11-1 in Hockey East, while the Terriers improve to 14-11-2 overall and 10-7-2 in league contests.

UMass out-chanced and out-shot BU in the opening period, controlling the bulk of the possession, but the Terriers headed into the first intermission with a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after emerging from the penalty box, Brandon Hickey finished off a tic-tac-toe play from Bobo Carpenter and Shane Bowers, tucking the puck around netminder Matt Murray at the 14:43 mark.

Just 33 seconds into the second period, the Minutemen tied the score at 1-1. Freshman John Leonard rifled a feed from classmate Mitchell Chaffee out of the corner past Jake Oettinger from the slot for his third power-play goal of the season. Freshman Mario Ferraro earned his team-leading 15th assist of the year on the tally, as well.

UMass appeared to take a 2-1 lead, 7:39 into the second period as senior Jake Horton's shot from the right faceoff circle found its way through Oettinger. However, the tally went to review and was called back for goaltender interference.

Boston University pulled in front once more with a power-play goal of its own at the 14:17 mark. Jordan Greenway knocked a bouncing puck home at the doorstep from Brady Tkachuk and Dante Fabbro.

The Terriers extended their lead to 3-1, 7:28 into the third period. Logan Cockerill won a battle along the boards and advanced the puck to Bowers, who drove to the net for his 13th goal of the year.

At the 12:04 mark, redshirt senior Niko Rufo finished off a centering feed at the top of the crease from freshmen Philip Laugnov and freshman Cale Makar to close the gap to 3-2, but BU held on for the remaining 7:56 of the contest.

Boston University ended the night with a 39-22 shot advantage and went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 1-for-4. UMass won 37 of 57 (64.9%) faceoffs on the evening, paced by freshman Jake Gaudet (12-for-18, 66.7%) and Rufo (8-for-11, 72.7%).

Murray stopped 36 shots for the Minutemen, while his counterpart, Oettinger, totaled 20 saves.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow night, Feb. 3, when the squad will travel to Durham, New Hampshire to face UNH at 7 p.m.
