BOSTON - Sophomore goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped all 33 shots he faced as his fourth shutout of the season lifted the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 2-0 win over Vermont on Friday night at Agganis Arena.

Drew Melanson scored for the Terriers on the power play in the first period and David Farrance added an even strength strike in the second to account for all of the offense BU would need.

With tonight's win and Maine's loss to Boston College, BU clinches fourth place and the right to play host to a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series, March 9-11 at Agganis Arena. The Terriers will host either Maine or UConn with games set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11. Ticket information will be forthcoming from BU Athletics and AgganisArena.com.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Terriers struck first with a power play goal 5:37 into the game. Jordan Greenway's shot from the wing got lost among a sea of bodies in the slot area but Drew Melanson found it and scored to put BU up, 1-0.

- BU doubled its lead with 2:55 left in the second period with David Farrance scoring his first collegiate goal. Gabriel Chabot broke up a play in the neutral zone and the puck squirted to Farrance who roofed a long wrist shot past Stefanos Lekkas.

GAME NOTES

- The shutout is the eighth of Oettinger's BU career and the 33 saves tonight are the second-most of any game from that octet. Oettinger stopped 34 shots while blanking No. 8 Boston College, 3-0, on January 16, 2017, at Conte Forum.

- Oettinger now has shutout Vermont in two of his three starts against the Catamounts, with tonight joining a 4-0 whitewashing of the Catamounts on Dec. 10, 2016, at Gutterson Fieldhouse where he stopped 28 shots.

- With his assist on David Farrance's goal, Gabriel Chabot now has a point in each of BU's last three games. Prior to this run, his only two points of the entire season came in the same game at Arizona State on Jan. 26.

- Freshman Hank Crone assisted on Drew Melanson's power play goal in the first period. He now has a point in six of his last eight games played after recording a point in just three of his first 20 collegiate games.

- With Melanson's power play strike, the Terriers now have a power play goal scored in 10 of their last 11 contests.

- BU has made a habit of getting out of the gates quickly. Tonight was the 15th time in the last 16 games where BU either led or was at least tied after the opening stanza. The Beanpot final against Northeastern on Feb. 12 is the only time BU has trailed after 20 minutes since Dec. 2 at Boston College.

- The Terriers welcomed back top line center Jordan Greenway. The junior had missed BU's last four games while competing for the United States Olympic team in PyeongChang, South Korea.

- The win is David Quinn's 100th as head coach of the Terriers. He becomes the fourth BU coach to hit the milestone, joining Jack Parker (897), Harry Cleverly (211) and Jack Kelley (206).

- BU's Hockey East quarterfinal opponent will be determined about three miles west of Agganis Arena. If Maine should defeat or tie Boston College Saturday night, the Terriers would face the Black Bears March 9-11. If BC wins, BU would play host to UConn instead.

UP NEXT

- BU will face Vermont again at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. The game is Senior Night and also the first 2,500 fans will receive a BU hockey tote bag courtesy of Barnes & Noble.
