HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn Huskies got another stellar defensive effort Tuesday night on the way to upsetting the No. 12 nationally ranked Northeastern Huskies, 4-1, in a Hockey East match-up from the XL Center. It was the fourth-straight game and fifth time in the last six the Huskies have allowed just one goal.
Four different UConn Huskies found the back of the net in the win while sophomore Adam Huska (Zvolen, Slovkia) posted 26 saves to earn the victory, his sixth of the season. UConn improves to 6-10-2 overall and 4-6-1 in Hockey East thanks to their third-straight win while Northeastern drops to 7-5-1 and 5-3-0 in league play.
UConn used another hot start, piling up three goals in the first period to solidify a lead they would never relinquish. Junior Maxim Letunov (Moscow, Russia) and seniors Johnny Austin (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Jesse Schwartz (Toronto, Ontario) all found the back of the net in the opening frame. Austin finished the night with a goal and two assists while both Letunov and Schwartz had a goal and an assist.
Northeastern cut it to 3-1 in the second period thanks to a Dylan Sikura power play goal but UConn sealed it in the third as sophomore Alexander Payusov (Montreal, Quebec), who returned after missing the last nine games with a knee injury, scored his seventh goal of the season.
NU held a 27-18 edge on the shot chart while both teams scored power play goals on the night. Northeastern started junior Ryan Ruck in goal who made five saves but allowed three and was lifted after the first. Freshman Cayden Primeau came in and made nine stops in the second and third.
1st:
UConn built a 3-0 first period lead with goals by Letunov, Austin and Schwartz. The Huskies got their first power play at 8:02 and put their first goal on the board just 25 seconds into the chance. The Huskies got a break-out and Schwartz centered a pass to Letunov who broke in on Ruck one-on-one and beat the goaltender stick side for a 1-0 lead on his third of the year.
UConn made it 2-0 just 1:30 later on Austin's second of the season. Freshman Brian Rigali (Libertyville, Ill.) dug the puck out of the right corner and classmate Zac Robbins (Glenview, Ill.) chipped it to Austin at the blue line. He skated into the circle and lifted a wrist shot past ruck, glove side.
Schwartz scored with 1:13 left in the first to put UConn up 3-0, his third-straight game with a goal and his sixth on the season. Off a face-off in the NU zone, senior Corey Ronan (Franklin, Mass.) chased a puck down behind the net and centered it to Schwartz in the slot who slid it past Ruck.
2nd:
UConn had two cracks at power plays in the second period, back-to-back, but came up empty. NU took advantage of their only extra skater chance with Sikura scoring his seventh on the season.
NU's Garret Cockerill carried the puck through the neutral zone and dished to Adam Gaudette along the left boards. Gaudette settled and fired cross ice to Sikura in the right circle who caught Huska leaning and beat him five-hole to cut the lead down to 3-1 at 17:12.
3rd:
UConn put the finishing touches on the win just over five minutes in the third frame as Payusov made it 4-1 with his seventh on the season. A failed NU clear saw Austin take the puck at the blue line and fire on net. Letunov got a stick on it before Payusov deflected in front of Primeau for the 4-1 lead at 5:11
Notes:
Tuesday's win marks the first for UConn in the all-time series with Northeastern (1-10-0). UConn has now beaten each team in Hockey East at least once since joining the league in 2014-15. It is also UConn's 13th win over a nationally ranked team under head coach Mike Cavanaugh.
Austin's three-point night sets a new career-high for the senior defenseman and marks his fifth multi-point game this season and eighth of his career. Schwartz extended his point streak to a career-best three-straight games and finished the month of November with six goals and two assists. It was his third multi-point game this season and seventh of his career. Letunov's two-points give the junior four multi-point games this year and 22 for his career.
The Huskies are 5-1-1 this season when allowing one goal or less.
