HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team held a 2-0 lead into the second period but Vermont would rattle off four unanswered goals on the way to a 4-2 Hockey East win Saturday afternoon from the XL Center to split the weekend conference series. The Huskies are now 3-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the HEA while UVM improves to 3-5-1 and 1-1-1 in the league.

UConn built a two goal lead thanks to goals by juniors Miles Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the first and Maxim Letunov (Moscow, Russia) early in the second period. Following the Letunov goal, the Huskies got a five-minute major power play chance but it was Vermont who capitalized and swung the momentum.

Sophomore Ross Colton drew a penalty on a break-away during the kill and was awarded a penalty shot, he converted to start the Catamount comeback. Senior Jarrid Privitera and sophomore Matt Alvaro scored late in the second, Alvaro on the power play, to give UVM a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

The Huskies outshot UVM 12-2 in the final period but sophomore goaltender Stefanos Lekkas stopped every shot he saw and the Catamounts tacked on a fourth goal by senior Anthony Petruzzelli to seal away the road win.

Lekkas finished the night with 31 saves to earn the win while Vermont killed off all four UConn power play chances. The Huskies held a 33-25 edge on shots and sophomore goaltender Adam Huska (Zvolen, Sweden) made 21 stops in the loss.

1st:

The Catamounts put consistent offensive pressure on the Huskies all period but UConn came away with a 1-0 lead heading to the locker room. Senior Derek Pratt (Mount Hermon, Mass.) cleared the UConn zone, hitting Gendron through the neutral zone. The Huskies got a two-on-one chance as Justin Howell (Saint Paul, Minn.) left a pass for Gendron in the slot who buried it for his first on the year and a 1-0 lead.

2nd:

UConn struck for a quick goal to start the second as Letunov made it 2-0 with his second on the season just 59 seconds in. Sophomore Benjamin Freeman (Falmouth, Maine) collected the puck through the neutral zone and broke up the right wing, sliding a pass to a crashing Letunov in the slot who buried it.

The Huskies got a chance at a five minute power play when Craig Puffer was called for a hitting from behind major and game misconduct at 1:38. The Catamounts would kill it off and in the process come up with their first goal thanks to a Colton shorthanded attempt. Breaking in on Huska, UConn's Joseph Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) was called for a hook on Colton, awarding the sophomore a penalty shot. He promptly buried it, stick side past Huska to cut the lead to 2-1 at 4:01.

Vermont tacked two more on in the period as Privitera scored his first of the season, finishing off a pretty feed from behind the net by Ace Cowans at 16:01. UVM got a power play chance at 17:12 and took their first lead of the weekend, 3-2, at 19:09 as Alvaro buried a rebound right in front.

3rd:

Vermont's Lekkas was stellar in the third, stopping all 12 UConn shots including a Freeman breakaway chance that would have tied the game.

The Catamounts put the seal on the win at 13:12 as Petruzzelli caught a deflection that beat Huska off a Derek Lodermeier shot that came off the half boards. It was Petruzzelli's first on the season for a 4-2 lead.

Notes:

UVM extended their lead in the all-time series to 23-4-1 and 12-3-0 on the road at UConn. The two schools will finish their season series with a meeting in Burlington on Tuesday, November 21.

Letunov scored his second on the season and ended a seven game scoring drought with his second period score. It was his 25th career goal in an UConn uniform. Gendron notched his first goal on the season in the loss, matching his career-high for the sixth time.

UConn's power play finished the weekend 0-for-6 and haven't scored in their last 13 chances dating back to Oct. 21 vs. Boston University.
