PROVIDENCE, R.I. - No. 3 Cornell (21-10-4) used five different goal scorers and received 20 saves from Austin McGrath to eliminate the No. 2 Northeastern men's hockey team in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, 5-1.

The Big Red scored the game's first four goals, including three in the first 12 minutes of the second period, before the Huskies cut the deficit to three late in the middle frame with a power play strike from Liam Pecararo, but that's as close as Northeastern would get as Cornell found the back of the net again 4:34 into the third period.

Northeastern finishes the season with a 27-11-1 record, good for the most wins in single-season history, reaching the national tournament for the third time in the last four seasons. Along the way, the Huskies captured the Beanpot for the second time in as many seasons and secured the Hockey East championship for the third time in team history.

Saturday marked the final collegiate game for seniors Eric Williams, Lincoln Griffin, Patrick Schule, Ryan Ruck, Austin Plevy, Brandon Hawkins and Pecararo. The core group of Williams, Griffin, Schule and Ruck began their careers 1-11-2 before ending as the winningest class in Northeastern history (90 wins), winning back-to-back Beanpots, two Hockey East crowns and appearing in the NCAA tournament three times.

Cornell capitalized on the few chances it got in the first half of the game, using it to jump out to a 4-0 lead midway through the game, beginning with Beau Starret's eighth of the year four minutes in when his seeing-eye shot somehow snuck under the arm of Cayden Primeau (14 saves) for the score.

Mitch Vandarlaan scored a highlight reel goal less than a minute into the second period when he stickhandled around an NU defender before roofing a shot for his 11thof the year, before Morgan Barron made it 3-0 with 10:13 left in the second on a wraparound that beat Primeau five-hole. Cornell would tack on a power play strike from Michael Regush with 7:14 left to make it 4-0.

Northeastern never went away, though, and got on the board with 4:00 to play in the second period on Pecararo's 11th of the season, banging home a rebound on the doorstep off a Jeremy Davies one-timer from Brandon Hawkins, but Cornell would get it right back four minutes into the third period when Brenden Locke capitalized on a turnover and beat Primeau for his seventh of the year.
