Northeastern, Merrimack Skate to 1-1 Draw

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -The Merrimack College Men's Hockey team held a steep advantage in play Friday night against #13 Northeastern, but ended the game in a 1-1 tie at Lawler Rink.

After the teams traded tallies in the first period, the sides skated goal-less for the final 50 minutes of the contest to earn each team a league point.

The Basics

Score: Merrimack 1, Northeastern 1
Records: Merrimack (2-6-1, 1-2-1 HEAM) | Northeastern (4-3-2, 1-2-1 HEAM)
Attendance: 2,014
Game Duration: 2:22

How It Happened

- The Warriors cashed in on their first power play of the game just over six minutes into the opening stanza thanks to a great sequence from Tyler Irvine and Zach Uens. After Declan Carlile held the zone, he dished to Uens, who fired a slap shot towards the net. Irvine was perfectly positioned in front of former Merrimack goalie Craig Pantano and deflected it home for his fourth on the campaign.

- Northeastern knotted the score at one in the dying minutes of the first period when Matt Demelis banged home a rebound after a bevy of saves by Warrior netminder Jere Huhtamaa.

- The teams traded power play opportunities in the second frame, but neither side converted. Merrimack had a strong grip on the game territorially with a 15-3 edge in shots on goal.

- Play evened up in the final regulation period, as the Warriors held the edge in shots at 8-7. The game's extra session also did not yield a winner. The home side had a 4-1 lead in shots in overtime.

Notes & Numbers

- The 38 shots on goal for Merrimack ties a season-high, which was previously set Nov. 1 against UConn.

- Pantano ended the night with 37 saves in his first game back in North Andover.

- Huhtamaa has now given up three or less goals in four consecutive starts.

- Chase Gresock led all skaters in shots with seven in his return to the Warrior lineup.
