Vomáèka Backstops UConn To 2-0 Victory Over Providence
Junior goaltender Tomas Vomacka stopped 37 shots for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior goaltender Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) turned away all 37 shots he faced on Monday afternoon as the Huskies posted a 2-0 shutout win over No. 15 nationally ranked Providence at the Mark Edwards Freitas Ice Forum.

Vomacka posted the second shutout win of his career and helped the Huskies to improve to 2-4-1 on the season. The Friars fall to 2-3-1 with the loss.

The Huskies got the game-winning goal from senior captain Adam Karashik (Ridgefield, Conn.) who scored his first goal since his freshman season, a span of 81 games. Junior Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) had a goal and an assist in the win, extending his career-best point streak to five-straight games.

Junior Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) assisted on both UConn goals. UConn killed off all four Providence power plays in the win.

The Friars outshot the Huskies 37-33 and goaltender Jaxson Stauber had 31 saves in the loss.

1st period:

The Huskies got the job down on the penalty kill in the first period, wiping away three Friar power plays to keep the game scoreless after the first 20 minutes of action. The Huskies also came up empty on a pair of power play chances.

2nd period:

The Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the second period as Karashik ended a 69-game drought without a goal. The senior defenseman scored his first on the season, picking up the puck at the blue line and throwing a wrist shot on net, getting some traffic in front of Stauber to beat the goaltender glove side.

3rd period:

UConn pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 14:41 mark as Evans scored his third on the season. Freshman Nick Capone (East Haven, Conn.) broke the puck out of the Huskies' zone to Kondelik through the neutral zone. Evans took a feed up the right wing and broke to net, rifling a shot on a tough angle to the near post to beat Stauber for the two-goal lead.

Up Next:

The Huskies will take on the New Hampshire Wildcats in a home-and-home series this weekend. UConn will head to UNH on Friday afternoon, January 1 for a 4 pm match-up live on NESN and then host the Wildcats on Saturday, January 2 at 4 pm at Freitas Ice Forum
