EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the second time in as many nights, the No. 13/14 Boston University men's ice hockey squandered a 1-0 lead entering the third period, as the Terriers fell to Michigan State, 3-1, on Saturday evening at Munn Ice Arena.

Sophomore Matt Lane scored for the Terriers, who move to an even 3-3-0 on the season. The Spartans secured their first win of the season to improve to 1-3-0.

Lane put BU on the board in the final minute of the opening stanza and the visitors held on to that slim lead until the 15:04 mark of the third, when the Spartans finally got on the board thanks to a tally by junior Brett Darnell.

Just 52 seconds later, freshman Joe Cox elevated a rebound over BU netminder Sean Maguire at the right post to give the Spartans the lead.

After a late flurry with an extra attacker did not produce an equalizer for BU, Michigan State tacked on an empty netter by senior Greg Wolfe in the closing seconds to seal the win.

MSU held a 33-27 shot advantage and got a 26-save effort in goal from sophomore Jake Hildebrand. The Terriers gave the home team seven power-play chances on the night, but the penalty kill was up to the task each time. BU went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Spartans controlled the play in the early stages, but BU weathered the storm and opened the scoring late in the first period just as it did on Friday at Michigan.

Freshman Doyle Somerby kept the puck in the MSU zone at the right boards and then pushed it up to junior Cason Hohmann. With Lane moving up the left side, Hohmann strung a cross-ice pass to him before he beat Hildebrand short side with 48 seconds left in the stanza. The assist by Somerby was his first collegiate point.

BU will return to action on Friday (Nov. 1) when it hosts No. 8 Providence to kick off a home-and-home weekend. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
