Wakefield, Mass. -- Hockey East is proud to announce a 89 student-athletes were named to the league's 2011-12 All-Academic
Team in the conferences 10th season of play, which was announced on Thursday afternoon. Each student-athlete achieved
a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing.
Vermont sophomore defenseman Megan Dalbec (Champlin, Minn.) and Maine freshman forward Katelyn Massey (Waterville,
Maine) shared the distinction as Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete, as the duo earned perfect 4.0 GPA's for the season. Dalbec
receives the award for the second consecutive season with the Catamounts.
The league also honored seven student-athletes that received "Distinguished Scholar" status. Those earning "Distinguished
Scholar" status achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four varsity seasons. Boston College led the way with three athletes
earning the honor in goaltender Kiera Kingston (Trumbull, Conn.), defenseman Kristin Regan (Hamden, Conn.) and forward Megan
Shea (Hanover, N.H.), while Maine had two honorees in defenseman Melissa Gagnon (St. Gilles, Que.) and Ashley Norum (Fairbanks,
Alaska). Boston University defenseman Kasey Boucher (Lewiston, Maine) and Connecticut goaltender Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire,
Que.) were also bestowed the honor.
The Women's Hockey East Association is an eight-team, Division-I college hockey conference which began play in 2002-2003,
with offices based in Wakefield, Mass. The league also sponsors a 10-team men's league which began play in 1984.
