~UNH takes two from ECAC; BU ties up SLU; UConn/PC take league games at UVM~

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- The Northeastern Huskies shutout their opponents this weekend, blanking
Providence 1-0 on Saturday and UConn 3-0 on Sunday. Between the pipes, freshman Florence Schelling
(Oberengstringen, Switzerland) earned 31 saves against the Friars, while sophomore Leah Sulyma
(Inuvik, N.W.T.) stopped all 34 on UConn’s shots. Their performances earned them Mission Rookie of
the Week and Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
New Hampshire lost in a shootout to Connecticut during a midweek matchup in Storrs. The teams
were knotted at three goals apiece at the end of regulation, before freshman Monique Weber (Rogers,
Minn.) scored in the fifth round of the shootout. Huskies forward Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.)
earned a goal and an assist in the victory. Connecticut beat Vermont 2-1 on Saturday, behind junior
Dominique Thibault’s (L’Orignal, Que.) league-leading tenth goal of the season. Hollstein assisted on
both goals for the Huskies, giving her four points on the week, which earned her Pure Hockey Player
of the Week honors.
UNH went on to sweep its ECAC foes, defeating St. Lawrence 3-2 Saturday and Clarkson 2-1 on
Sunday. UNH sophomore Jenn Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) continued her five-game goal-scoring streak
after scoring her sixth of the year against Clarkson. The four-point weekend keeps the Wildcats unbeaten
on the year. Boston University earned a 2-1 victory over Clarkson on Saturday, behind senior
co-captain Gina Kearns’ (Norwood, Pa.) two goals. The Terriers continued to battle against the ECAC
on Sunday, skating to a 2-2 tie against St. Lawrence, while junior Melissa Anderson (Langley, B.C.) had
a hand in both goals, tallying a goal and an assist.
Maine split the weekend against Sacred Heart, losing 3-2 on Friday and bouncing back to a commanding
11-1 victory on Saturday. Sophomore Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, B.C.) notched five points in
the second game, including her first career hat trick. Eight other Black Bears enjoyed multiple-point
games. Providence traveled to Burlington on Saturday, beating the Catamounts 4-2 despite Vermont’s
Chelsea Furlani (Colchester, Vt.) tallying two goals on the day. Providence’s offense was spread around,
as four separate Friars scored, including Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.), who is tied for eighth in
the league with four on the season.

TEAM NOTES
Boston College: The BC women’s hockey team skated 25 laps on Sunday to support
October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month…BC vs. PC has been picked as USCHO.com’s
Game of the Week for Saturday.
Boston University: Boston University is now 1-1-1 against nationally ranked teams
this season...Before this season, the Terriers had never earned a result against a team
ranked better than eighth place...This season, BU has now defeated No. 5 Mercyhurst and
tied No. 6 St. Lawrence...The Terriers are now unbeaten in the last three games, with two of
those games against nationally ranked opponents...The Terriers are now 2-1-1 against ECAC
Hockey teams this season ...All three of the Terriers wins this season have come in one-goal
games, while both losses were in two-goal games...After scoring only one power-play goal
over the first four games of the season, BU has now scored a power-play goal in each of
the last two games.
University of Connecticut: Last season, the Huskies started the Hockey East season
with a 2-1-0 record and ended the season 13-5-3. UConn finished in second place in the
standings and finished last season with a program-best 22 victories...With Wednesdays’s win
over UNH, the Huskies snapped a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats...UConn opened
the 2007-08 season with a win in Hockey East play, defeating Providence 5-0 on Oct. 25
and have started the conference slate with a win for the past three seasons...UConn has
extended its all-time winning streak against Vermont two four games with Saturday’s win
and improved to 9-1-0 all time...Dominique Thibault (L’Orignal, Ont.) has recorded at least
one goal in all six game so far...Junior blueliner Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) leads Hockey
East defenders with nine points.
University of Maine: Vanessa Vani (St. Catharines, Ont.) had three assists this weekend,
moving her into second place on Maine’s all-time career assist list with 48. She is also
only one point away from moving into a three-way tie for fifth on the Black Bears all-time
points list...Maine is now 9-1 all-time against Sacred Heart, including the program’s first
ever win. The beat the Pioneers 3-2 in the first game of the inaugural 1997-98 season...
Six games into the season the Black Bears have nine power play goals, only two less than
their 2007-08 total...Maine is averaging 3.5 goals per game, exactly two more per game
than last season.
University of New Hampshire: New Hampshire is undefeated through six games
for the fourth time in head coach Brian McCloskey’s tenure. In that time, the longest unbeaten
streak at the outset of a season is nine games (9-0-0) in 2007...Following last Wednesday’s
3-3 tie at UConn, the Wildcats are 4-0-9 in their last 13 games decided by overtime...UNH has
won each of its last six games vs. ECAC teams...With a two-point effort against St. Lawrence,
Kacey Bellamy ascended into a tie for ninth place on the program’s all-time defenseman
scoring list (with Nicki Luongo and Shawna Davidson) at 84 points.
Northeastern University: Northeastern has not started the season with a six-game
unbeaten streak since 2001-02, when they went on to go 27-7-1...Northeastern is now 22-4-3
all-time in home openers, with their only losses coming in 2006-07, 1999-00, 1985-86, and
1981-82...Northeastern has not won their first hockey east game of the season since 2005-
06 when they topped BU 4-3 on Oct. 17, 2005...Northeastern goaltenders have pitched four
shutouts through six games. This tops their season totals from 2007-08 (one), 2006-07 (one),
2005-06 (two), and 2004-05 (two) and is the most since 2003-04 (seven on the season).
The Huskies have not shut out consecutive opponents since February of 2006, when they
blanked Vermont on the 19th, and beat Niagara 3-0 on the 25th.
Providence College: Freshman goaltender Genevieve Lacasse has made at least 25
saves in all four of her starts this season as she holds a .933 sv% to go along with a 2.29
GAA...Classmate Laura Veharanta has registered a power-play goal in three of the past four
games...In the 4-2 victory over Vermont, the Friars had two players register their first career
points for Providence...Junior Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) scored her first goal while
freshman Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) registered her first point with an assist on
the opening goal of the game.
University of Vermont: In its first Hockey East action, Vermont dropped a pair of
tight games falling to Connecticut, 2-1, Saturday in its home opener and to Providence, 4-2,
on Sunday...Chelsea Furlani scored twice Sunday and has five goals in her last four games
against Hockey East foes...In its first four contests, UVM is 6-for-34 on the power play (17.6%)
while killing 24 of 26 opponent attempts (92.3%)...The Catamounts host ECAC rival Cornell
Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
