UNH TO HOST SEVENTH ANNUAL WHEA TOURNAMENT IN DURHAM

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - The Women’s Hockey East Association announced on Tuesday that the 2009 WHEA Championship Tournament will be held on the campus of the University of New Hampshire the weekend of Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 at the Whittemore Center Arena in Durham, N.H.

The Wildcats earned the right to host the Tournament by clinching at least a share of the regular-season title last Saturday night with a win against Providence College. The rest of the tournament field is set with Boston College, Boston University, University of Connecticut, Northeastern University and Providence College qualifying for the 7th annual Tournament. The WHEA regular-season will conclude this Sunday, February 22nd.

The regular season determined the six teams that qualify for the Hockey East Championship Tournament. The league athletic directors voted to expand the tournament field to six teams at the annual conference meetings in Naples, Fla. in April of 2008. The third and fourth seeds in the tournament will host a quarterfinal round game on Saturday, February 28 or Sunday, March 1 on their respective campuses. The advancing teams will then be reseeded with the top two seeds to play at UNH in the semifinal round on Saturday, March 7 at noon and 3 o’clock. The WHEA Championship Game will be played on Sunday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m. The game will be tape delayed on the New England Sports Network (NESN) at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the 2009 Women’s Hockey East Championship go on sale Friday, February 20 at 10 a.m. Tickets may be purchased through the Whittemore Center Box Office, by calling 603-868-7300 or by logging on to www.unhwildcats.com. Student from Hockey East schools are eligible for a complimentary ticket, with a valid student ID, at the box office on game day.

The Women’s Hockey East Association is an eight-team, Division-I college hockey conference which began play in 2002-2003, with offices based in Wakefield, Mass. The league also sponsors an 10 team men’s league which began play in 1984-1985.
